3 things that shouldn’t worry you in Hospital
The total bill when you are checking out from the hospital is
often a rude awakening, as is the fact that your health insurance was quite
insufficient to cover it all. In addition, the extra charges incurred because
you decided to take the best room available, so the package can burn a hole in
your pocket.
Often, the cost of healthcare treatment is as much as a
shock, as the illness itself. Here are three reasons why you must have adequate
medical
insurance plan, so that your focus remains entirely on the patient:
1. If you have been lucky enough not to need a hospital visit
in the recent past, you are likely to be in for a rude shock as to how
expensive treatment is these days. The hospital billing counter is no place to
get a shock, so click here to understand what your costs might be. Earlier this
year, my mother needed a hip replacement. We had the procedure done at one of
Mumbai’s leading hospitals. While the treatment was first rate, the total bill
of Rs 10 lakhs had us shocked.
2. Worse than seeing an astronomical bill is being told that
your health insurance is inadequate to cover the total amount? The hit on your
savings can be significant (as was the case for us in point 1).
3. Did you know that surgery, surgeons and other charges can
vary by the type of room you choose? So, during admission, a hugely annoying
thing to hear is that your insurance limits only allow for a certain grade of
room. Or conversely, while your policy allows for a higher room category, the
total cost of the procedure is likely to be far in excess of what your overall
policy amount is, so you will need to scale down your choice of room category
etc.
The most common problem with health insurance is people
having too little of it, which is almost as bad as having none at all. Be sure
to check how much health insurance you need instead of assuming your current
health insurance cover is good enough.
Ultimately, prevention is better than cure. So being better
prepared and aware of your health issues will prod you into taking care of
yourself. There are also a number of tools available online for people to use
to assess their health, such as diabetes risk assessment calculator, body fat
calculator, Glycemic Index calculator etc.
