3 Softwood Options You Should Know About

by S3t Koncepts Interior Design Company
Joinery companies in Dubai say that customers often take softwood as an inferior alternative to hardwood. Thinking that softwoods should only be used when one has to pinch big time on budget. But that’s not entirely true. Though it is true that softwood are generally less hard and tough than hardwood, there are many high-grade softwoods which are certainly stronger than cheaper hardwoods. And the fact of the matter is, as experts at top fit-out solutions in Dubai say, that the right classification of softwood and hardwood has nothing to do with their durability, and everything to do with the type of trees from which they are obtained; which are Decidius and Conifers.  So let us have a look upon the top 3 softwood which you could use, before you start getting second thoughts about the quality of this category.

1. Balsa

Certainly, the softest wood ever measured, Balsa scores only a 90 (lbf) on the Janka hardness scale. But that makes for no reason to put this type in the bucket of “no use”. Also known by its scientific name “Ochromo Pyramidale”, Balsa is Brazilian native. The wood is mostly used in case of model making, and is much appreciated due to its commendable weight-to-strength ratio. The lightness of the wood is much attributed to its large cells, which are of this nature in order to store water. Balsa models are used in the field of aeronautics and other engineering fields, and tests are often conducted upon such models by the experts to derive important conclusions. Other than engineering, Blasa modeling is also done for DIY art.

2. Cedar

The thing with Cedar is that it comes in many types, each one with different Janka Hardness. Like Western Red Cedar is one of the softest wood, scoring only a 350 (lbf) on Janka sacle. While Eastern red Cedar scores easily score a good 900(lbf), making it one of the strongest softwood. Cedar is not prone to thermal expansion, moisture, and cracking, making it a stable wood type. It is used for clothing storage, shingles, and musical instruments.

3. Fir

Fir has 12 types, but the most well-known occasion that the tree has found a use for is Christmas. Firs like Balsam and Noble are mostly used for this purpose. The most famous Fir types used by many fit-out solutions in Dubai are Fraser Fir and Douglas Fir. According to many interior designing experts, Fraser fir should be considered as the true fir, as they are hardier to Douglas. The latter one is often used for sake of flooring, but people, many times, call it out for this. That shouldn't be done though. As many Joinery companies in Dubai are of the opinion that Douglas Firs make up for a good flooring material because of their hardness. And that is certainly true. Douglas scores a 660(lbf) on the Janka hardness scale. The color of this fir type is also warm, and it wears beautifully with time.
