Are you looking for a way to make your car look great and perform better? Maybe air hoods are what you're looking for. If you've ever watched a Hollywood movie featuring sports cars in intense chase scenes, then you've probably seen an air hood. An air hood, which is also called a hood scoop, is the part of the car hood that is raised higher than the rest of the hood. While there are decorative air hoods without openings, most air hoods have an opening either in front or at the back to let air into the hood.

Some people modify the hood of their car to include an air hood just because it enhances the overall look of their car. But air hoods actually help your car perform better. They allow air to flow into your hood, helping your engine run better. Having more air in the hood means your engine can use more air for combustion. Fuel is burned faster, allowing the car to have increased power and speed. What kind of air hood should you get? Here are a few types of popular air hoods for cars.

The Shaker Air Hood

A shaker hood is an air hood that's unlike most types. It isn’t just a part of your hood; it’s directly connected to your engine, funneling air into the filter. The scoop protrudes through the hood from the engine. In effect, the hood shakes along with the engine as your car runs, giving it its name.

Cowl Induction Air Hood

While most air hoods face the front of the car, the cowl induction's opening faces the windshield. It’s often mistaken for a decorative air hood because the opening is hard to see. The unique design is meant to absorb pressurized air created at the base of the windshield when the car is running at high speed.

Ram Air Hood

A ram air hood consists of two separate air hoods on the left and right of your hood, making them look like ram horns. A ram hood scoop has a narrow opening that gets wider as the ridges get closer to the engine. This allows the air entering the hood to dissipate and slow down. This kind of air hood is often found on high-velocity cars.

There are many more types of air hoods on the market. Whether you decide to get a shaker, cowl induction, or ram air hood, you should consult your auto parts provider to learn which one best suits your car.
