However, it faced a crisis in 1997 when three of its employees got killed in a robbery that took place in Washington, DC. That is when the leadership skills of the CEO, Howard Schultz, came into play.

Howard Schultz flew straight to DC immediately after the incident. He spent a week with the families and co-workers of those three employees. All US airlines were ordered to shut down for days after the 9/11 attack. Southwest Airlines is the only airline that beat all odds and emerged successful only because of its fearless leader, James Parker, the CEO of Southwest Airlines. Thousands of passengers from different airline companies were stranded all across the country during that time. James Parker encouraged his employees to de-stress their stranded customers as much as possible.

He asked his employees to help the stranded passengers enjoy themselves at the local bowling alley or at the movies. It doesn’t stop there. Other airlines had to cut staff after the terrorist attack. Southwest Airlines, however, announced that it would be keeping all its employees and even will issue a profit-sharing payment. At times of crisis, James Parker showed true crisis management skills, a strong belief in the company’s vision and creative problem-solving skills.

3. Toro

Toro is a reputed lawn equipment manufacturer and is accustomed to lawsuits owing to the hazards associated with the manufacturing of its machinery. The company went through severe financial hurdles during the late 1980s. That is when it placed Ken Melrose as its CEO. Ken Melrose implemented a new mediation policy to reduce the company’s cost of lawsuits.

Ken also addressed product liability claims to take care of the 50 lawsuits faced by his company for over 50 years before 1980. He sent his company’s representative to meet with those people and their families who were injured by the products of Toro. He wanted to see what went wrong and he also expressed sympathy and attended to the needs of the affected families. The company noticed 95% of the cases being resolved throughout the tenure of Ken Melrose.
