Purpose - Dexter J. Williams

During my life's journey I have been taught many lessons, but the ones that stood out the most are the ones I will mention here. Who am I? I will simply say I am a student in life's University. Oh, I have done my BSc. and even completed my MSc., but my Phd. will never be accomplished until my last paper has been handed in. For this is the very last of life's lessons not only I must learn but all of us. Some learnt it quickly and hence they transitioned at a young age, others like myself will very much like to take our time and learn the lessons as slowly as we possibly can so as to enjoy their meanings and purpose. I'm in no hurry!

What is purpose? In fact what is your purpose?

That could be easily answered. Often times we try to complicate simple things, but the way you discover your purpose is by asking yourself a simple question. "If money was not an issue and I had all the money I needed to live a happy life (financially Independent): the kids school fees are always paid, no need to worry about a mortgage because it has been paid off in full, money to travel the world and all that I would like to do. What would you be doing with the remainder of your time? When the answer comes to you do not dismiss it as being stupid, because it sounds a little crazy. That answer is your life's purpose. Maybe, its sailing, helping kids discover their true potential, or just cooking, whatever it is - it is your life's purpose! Understand where I am coming from, you will do that “thing” that came to you not because you have to but because you want to. You are now doing something you enjoy, and that's what you were placed here on earth to do. My former boss always said to me, "If you enjoy what you do, then you will never work a day of your life!"

This leads me to my next question, “Why aren't we enjoying what we are doing?” Is it because we have allowed the cares of this world to choke us of our dreams, our goals and our purpose? Is it because, we were told by our parents that we should study hard while we were in school so we could get a good job. And as obedient children we did exactly that, studied hard and we found ourselves a job and in some instances a good job. But guess what - we are still unhappy. Our parents did exactly that but they too are/were still unhappy, even though they tried to make the most of the situation. And unfortunately we are continuing the cycle! We are repeating the same mistakes over and over, passing it from us to our children, then their children then their children children. When will it stop? Can it be stopped? Yes, when we decide to stop it. We have to be torch carriers and change it for our children, our future generation.

Thank you.
