Let's hope these IM techniques become obsolete in 2011
There are a few techniques used regularly by Internet Marketers to make more sales that I look forward to not seeing again. Not the marketers, the techniques.
I will be happy when all the videos in sales pages are :
I will by very happy when there are :
Not even one.
It's especially annoying when I wait until later to check the page, then FireFox freezes, I have to close it, and that Exit Pop Up shows its ugly face. :(
I guess the "exit pop up" works well with new marketers. Not anymore with me. Here's why :
I will by very happy when they stop saying things like :
I will by very happy when they start using the OTO technique in creative ways.
About that, I have a couple of ideas that I want to try. They sure aren't about using one or more unexpected OTO pages.
Ahhh, what a way to start a new day. I had to get this article off my chest, I thought of it just after closing the session on my PC last night, and I was too tired.
If there are other things that bother you, please comment on it, I will stick your comments to the top.
I will be happy when all the videos in sales pages are :
- with the control buttons : Most videos we click in it and it can be paused. I want all the regular controls, like Rewind, Fast Forward, i.e. give us the little progression bar
- Short
- Without fluff
- With less hype, more info
- Not 20 minutes life story for 5 minutes info
- showing the order button at the beginning, if the video is 5 minutes or less, that will be tolerable, or of course if I have the control
- not starting automatically
- ordinary voices, i.e. not 100 % excitement. They don't have to sound like the guy from The Price Is Right ( no offense to him )
- Put the emphasis on content, on choice of words
- not saying "I'll get to that in a minute" then we wait 3 minutes to hear that statement again, for another couple of times
I will by very happy when there are :
NO EXIT POP UP !!!
Not even one.
It's especially annoying when I wait until later to check the page, then FireFox freezes, I have to close it, and that Exit Pop Up shows its ugly face. :(
I guess the "exit pop up" works well with new marketers. Not anymore with me. Here's why :
- Hey ! They lower the price because they consider us family. That is so lame
- Oh, it was selling for $97, but now you're ready to sell it for $47 ? Why ? You tell me it was overpriced in the first place ?
- Please, that nice looking virtual agent that starts a conversation to "understand my reasons" or simply to "make me a better offer" is just an annoyance. Do I look like I have a handle in the back and you can carry me anywhere ?
I will by very happy when they stop saying things like :
- Limited time offer: When you get to the page a year later and you see the exact same words
- Limited number of copies: Yeah right, you sell your product for $27 and you only want to make $2,700 ?
- We don't know when the page will be removed from the Net: see "Limited time offer"
- The price will increase soon: When you get to the page a year later and the price is the same
I will by very happy when they start using the OTO technique in creative ways.
About that, I have a couple of ideas that I want to try. They sure aren't about using one or more unexpected OTO pages.

There is Something for Everyone
Because these sales hypes keep making money for the marketers, they will continue to be relevant far into and beyond 2011.
However, what I have learnt to do is to ignore what I do not like and move on.
Trying to change how others see the world may be asking for 2too [emphasis] much.
Nice article, Philippe.

@Craig, you're right, these techniques work with the newbies for sure.
I count on my not using any of those to build a good reputation and reduce the percentage of lost customers once they discover me.
We'll see what happens.
I'm aware those techniques bring immediate additional sales. But if the people then discover marketers who work differently, I bet some of those customers will follow the "no cheap trick" marketers.
I always think long term. Instant sales followed by lost custom

Great article Phillipe. I feel the same way, but I'm not expecting it to happen because there are just too many people who fall for the (crap)and then promote it.

Al, I use the FireFox plug-in for not letting autoplay videos run :)

Can hang with you on most of it, Philippe--but if you are advertising on TE's or safelists--an autoplay video is a must. Don't waste your money or clicking time really if you don't.

I also use filters + separate email accounts for lost credit services. For sending out personal mailings I now use another free service with a higher delivery rate than gmail and is comaptible with an autoresponder. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Filters work. Just junk emails coming from same sender.

@Oldbuddy @paris don't tell me you read each and everyone of those emails. I prefer to be hyperactive at APSense, I will get more results building relationships.
@Catherine, please send me the name in a PM. Thank you ! :)

Hundred emails is not a problem with me. I for one enjoy reading emails. You just need to organize your email processor. Create folders, manage your filters. It makes life easy reading emails.

Nothing annoys me more than more than one pop up. I have seen one very successful marketer use this technique. I don't want to mention any names here but it seems like maybe he heard the cries of discontent. His newest launch is down to 1 or 0 exit pops, which I was very happy to see.
So, these successful methods, will run their course. It may be a while and then something new will come along. Have you seen the new exit pop video. That will be a good one and will probably convert even b

@Philippe are you saying you don't get hundreds of emails a day? Well I sure do and it's not getting any lighter, I just know how to handle it better. I'm still seeing just as much in your face advertising too and if anything, it's increasing.

There are websites who do advertising business and utilizes the pop behind window technique. Pop behind window is fine with me, but it's kind of annoying when you click on one ad, couple of ads or even more are popping up, which doesn't make sense because, tendency is I would have to immediately close it, without even bothering to see the headline.

It's already happening, Oldbuddy. People are better informed. The face of IM is changing. IMO, email marketing is changing. List building is changing. Who likes to receive hundreds of emails per day ?

Hey I whole heatedly agree, but it's just not going to happen anytime soon.

I'm not exactly working on my second million but it would seem that Philippe and Dave have valid points to consider.

ideals are nice but in business you have to go with what works not necessarily that which fits your ideals

@Dave @Oldbuddy I'm an idealist. Dave in particular knows that. :)
There are some successful marketers who do things without relying on such annoying tactics, I believe they will stand above the others in the long term.
When I find the time to look at my emails again, I will confirm what I just said.

@Oldbuddy your right! the more annoying something is the better it converts

It's All Up to YOU! Act NOW!
WOW, I was flying high there for a minute thanks to Phillppe posting an article about the exact same things that have been bugging me too regarding these techniques. It was like you were inside my head Phil. Then Oldbuddy brought me back down to the reality of earth. Some fools, noobs, or lookie-loos click on these things, get curious, buy something, and then the guru's say "see, it works." I don't want to resort to these tactics, but we want to make money right?
