Campus ads now can?t take you for a trip
by Hardeep Saini SEOInstance like that of an IIT Kharagpur professor
cheating students by running a fake institute from the campus and even doling
out degrees using the IIT tag can now be avoid, thanks to the Advertise
Standards Council of India (ASCI) coming out with a new Advertise code for the learning
sector.
From December 1, universities, colleges, schools
and coaching classes coming out with advertisements which claim 100% placement'
and world class infrastructure,' will have to prove their claim or face the
music. The code also applies to advertisments for educational programmes.
ASCI had introduced the draft of the new
advertising code in August asking for feedback and inputs from the public and
educational institutions. A release from the council says that four sub-clauses
in the code are based on the feedback received.

ASCI chairman Rajiv Dube said, "We received a digit of suggestions and inputs on the draft guidelines, largely from lay citizens and institutes. Such a response reinforced the importance we placed on the learning sector and the need to treat it as a special case. We now know that our belief is a major public concern too, and sincerely hope that the code will reduce incidences of wrongful advertise in the learning sector."
The code prohibits advertisements claiming corporate ranking of institutes without giving details of the ranking organization and the date the ranking was published. The code also prohibits display of a building or infrastructure facilities created using models or computer graphics. It requires visuals of the infrastructure of the institution shown in the advertisement to be real and existing at the time the ad is released.
It attempts to clamp down on misleading testimonials of high-flying students who may not even have been part of the learning programme, exam or subject. ASCI has made it mandatory for advertisement to give exact details of students giving testimonials. It also asks advertisers to mention the total number of students who passed out from the class, whenever they claim an absolute digit of students placed in jobs.
ASCI has prohibited institution and programmes from claiming recognition, authorization, accreditation or affiliations without providing proper evidence. The guidelines also require the name and place of the affiliation institution which provide degrees and diplomas on behalf of the educational institution to be prominently displayed on the ad.
"With the new guidelines, learning institutions will not be able to promise jobs, admissions, job promotions and salary increase without substantiating such claims," the council release said.
Commenting on the need for the new guidelines, vice-chancellor of Madras University G Thiruvasagam said, "Students should be careful about which institution or course they enrol themselves in, because the effects will be known only after 3 years. This is why the UGC provides updated information about recognized universities on its website."
