The telecom network in India has reached a landmark by becoming the second largest network in the world. The total subscriber base in India is over 670 million as of July 2010. This took the overall teledensity in the country to 58 percent.

The urban areas' teledensity has increased from 26 percent to 125 percent since 2005. Even the rural teledensity has grown remarkably to over 27 percent from 1.73 percent.

The growth in the number of subscribers in India can be attributed to various factors like reduction in tariffs, conducive government policies and proactive steps from the telecom industry. The telephone is no longer a dream but within the common man's reach.

With the 3G revolution under its way, the country is all set to experience a communication revolution. And the growth in subscriber number only points to the increased acceptance of technology by the people of the nation.
