Callaloo Poets

A packed audience of students, parents, poets and supporters filled Mellow Moods on Saturday evening in celebration of World Poetry Day. Many of the students were participants in the second World Poetry Day Poetry Competition themed "How Can I Be a Good Role Model" put on by the Callaloo Poets in conjunction with the BVI National Commission for UNESCO.

After members of the Callaloo Poets reviewed the 19 entries from primary school students, both Sophie Nicholas of the Cedar International School and Brandon Kartick of the St. George?s Primary School tied as the first prize winners of the World Poetry Day Poetry Competition. The second prize winner is Hugo Smith of the Cedar International School. Tate Hempel and Gaby Gordon-Fox both also of the Cedar International School tied for third place.

Entries were also received by Agape Total Life Academy students Charisma Williams, Jhaved Jones, Mickalia Mignott and Keilin Araujo. Alexandra Young, Ryan Wooldridge, Julia Prevost, Zanti Dick-Read, Johanna Kerins, Kerstin Gordon, Sam Riegels, Leo Forte, Reef Downing and Jude Kinkead of the Cedar International School also submitted entries. The poems were judged by members of the Callaloo Poets who all confirmed that selecting the winners was a very difficult task because of the high caliber of entries submitted by the students.

The awards were distributed by Mrs. Alison Flax-Archer, the Secretary General of the BVI National Commission for UNESCO. The top three winning students each received a cash prize, an award certificate and an educational reference book. The third prize winners each received a cash prize, an award certificate and an inspirational book. All the other participants received a participation certificate and a gift certificate for school supplies. The prizes were provided by the BVI National Commission for UNESCO, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith, Harneys and National Educational Services Bookstore.

Sophie, Brandon, Gaby, Jhaved, Mickalia, Keilin, Charisma, Alexandra and Johanna attended the poetry reading, shared their poems and received their awards. Members of the Callaloo Poets also shared poems with the audience.

The Callaloo Poets would like to thank the students for participating and the teachers and parents for encouraging the children to write and also the Library Services Department for showcasing local poetry in the Road Town Public Library for World Poetry Day. In addition, the poets are looking forward to more participation from the public school students for future competitions.
