Visiting the Wildlife Sanctuary
It was too wet to work in the garden on Sunday, so we went up to the hills, to
visit the Healesville Sanctuary, which is part of the Melbourne Zoo. It's purely for
Australian native animals.
It's set in the bush, and has a beautiful creek running through it, where there are
wild platypus, although they're not usually in evidence when visitors are around.
Would have loved to have seen one, as have never seen a platypus in the wild.
We did get to see some a wild wallaby hiding in the garden near the Raptor
display though!
The Birds of Prey display is really great - the animals are those which are unsuitable
for release for some reason, and they are trained to fly for the staff. On Sunday, we
saw four different birds being flown, a brown kite, a small falcon, a buzzard, and a
wedge-tailed eagle.
The eagle was a little nervous and didn't actually fly, and during the talk we discovered
why he was upset - there was a wild eagle flying above and it came and perched in
the trees around the flight area. Apparently it happens often, and the wild birds try
to steal the food the others are given.
Also on the way to the hills, we saw a bunch of kangaroos feeding, and even a pair
of eagles soaring over the bush. All in all it was a good day, and the only time it
rained we were in the bistro having our lunch! The rain kept many people away,
so as a bonus it wasn't crowded.
Being a snake person, we also watched the reptile presentation, and saw a
bearded dragon, a goanna, and an amethyst python, all beautiful animals. Can't
stay away from those reptiles! :-)
Sorry but I forgot to take my camera, so no shots of the animals this time.........

Wow, sounds like you had a very beautiful day.
I love to visit the Santa Barbara, Ca. Zoo. It's so beautiful there.
The center of the park sets a bit up on a hill, and you have beautiful ocean views.
For many years, I bought a 1 year pass, for my boys & I. We would see all the beautiful animals, and then set in the middle of the park, and enjoy our packed lunches.
Last time I went, they had a brand new baby lioness. So much fun to watch her with the mom. You could hear the Dad Roar fr

San Diego Wild Animal Park sounds great, Beth! We have something similar
here, the Werribee Park Zoo, just outside Melbourne - it's part of the Melbourne Zoo
group, as is Healesville Sanctuary.
Unfortunately, the State Govt., in its wisdom, has just about decided to GIVE the
Werribee zoo and 20 million dollars, to a theme park owner, to develop it into a theme park.
What that will do to the peace and quiet of the animals, who knows!
We've signed a petition against it, but whether we'll

that sounds like you had a lovely day! Zoos like that are so pleasant to visit because they're more like a natural setting instead of the old iron bar kinds...
I haven't visited the San Diego Wild Animal Park in a couple of decades (or more) but they have this car ride that takes you all around the outskirts so you can see the savannah of african animals. When we were watching the Rhinos it was a real treat for the zoo officials also because we witnessed the mating of two Rhinos and she was ju
