Getting A Tradesman To Come Is Hard Work!
We recently decided to get some quotes for either painting or replacing the roof,
whichever was necessary.
The first roofing guy we called was excellent, and turned up on time, after earlier
ringing and saying he could come about an hour sooner than expected, if that was
ok. Naturally, we said fine.
Tradesman number 2 rang on the morning he was to come, and said since it was
raining, he wouldn't go up on the roof and measure up. Said fine, we'll make another
appointment.
Tradesman number 3 couldn't come for four weeks, so I pushed it a bit and the
company said he'd come in 2-1/2 weeks, which we accepted.
Meanwhile, tradesman number 2 had been rung, and we'd fixed another time.
The morning he was to come, his partner rang and said they couldn't make it
that morning, but he'd be there at four in the afternoon. We said fine, so long
as you are here before 5pm. No problem.
Well, yes, there was a problem - that was in mid February, and we're still waiting
for him to turn up on March 3rd! So much for tradesman number 2.
No 3 was due at 430 pm. At about 4pm that day, a guy knocked on the door, and
said his boss couldn't come, something had happened, but he was the carpenter
and he'd come to measure up. Good, so off he went onto the roof to measure up.
Tried to talk me into getting some woodwork done as well, which I refused. We're
doing it ourselves.
After he'd measured, I asked when I'd get the quote, as I needed it soon. Was promised
he'd email it to the boss that night, and I'd get the quote next day. Again fine, so I gave
my email address so he could give it to me in writing.
No, not really fine - that was 13th February, and I'm still waiting for the quote!
I know you're supposed to get three quotes, but really, if everyone is that bad at
turning up, how do you do it?
Went with the first guy, and paid the deposit. Today is the day when the roofers
are supposed to arrive and start work. Will it happen? Who knows!
Stay tuned for the next instalment..........

Three days later, and we finally have a nice shiny new roof, with light insulation
added, plus new gutters and downpipes. I am now broke! :-)
It's been an experience, to say the least.
Strangely enough, while the guys were working up there, one of the other
two companies we'd asked for quotes rang to see if we were still interested
in them quoting.
Since this was 5th March, and they were supposed to quote on 13th Feb,
it gave me great satisfaction to say, "Well, actually no thankyou, s

Hi Jeff,
Well, I have a firm quote for the work, and nothing should be added to it.
Still waiting for the other quotes to arrive! :-)
There's a guy up on the roof as we speak, making one h*** of a racket, and
the rest of them should arrive shortly. It's 833am and they said they'd be here
at 8am if not earlier. Hhmmmmmm. they also said they'd finish today,
but I'm not holding my breath.
We're also getting some insulation under the roof, which together with
the bats we already ha

In the States, it's likely that a Contractor will often show up as planned, but do things like know holes in perfectly good walls and floors, just to 'Pad the bill"...
One even had his accomplices try to steal an entire home... It was made of bricks, and bricks can fetch a good price on the Black Market.... Go figure! LOL! :)
I wish you the very best of goings with your work! :)

Update again :
The tradesmen are here, so are some of the required materials, but the
stuff they wanted first has been left out of the order..........
Oh well, at least they are here and starting some of the work.
Will be really glad when this is over. :-)

Well, the tradesmen aren't going to turn up today. The contractor just rang
and let me know that the foreman called in sick. No roofing today, I guess.
I've paid 20% of the cost as a deposit, so they all better turn up tomorrow
as promised, along with all the materials ordered.
Do others have this problem?
