Grass Trees Are Hard To Grow
I really like grasstrees. (They used to be know as blackboys, but that's now politically
incorrect) They grow very slowly, and are not easy to grow, at least not in my
experience. The literature says they are very easy to propagate though.
Last year I bought some seeds of a Xanthorrhoea species on Ebay, but so far, not
one germination. Hopefully, when I plant the rest of the seeds, something will happen.
Recently I was given another packet of seeds by my partner, along with some special
plant germination granules. Maybe these seeds will be more productive, as they are
a commercial brand. Here's hoping anyway, and the granules may make the difference.
We saw some grass trees in a couple of nurseries last week, and the smallest, about
12 inches high, was selling for $75, and well over $200 for a 4ft specimen. My partner
would have bought me one anyway, but it's a fair amount of cash for one plant.
The picture above is of grasstrees growing in the wild - too bad I don't have a
couple like that in my garden.
If anyone here in Australia has experience growing these from seed, please give
me any tips you can think of.
