Viral Marketing. What is it?

From what I have gathered it is a technique in which you use a catchy idea of group of ideas to catch the attention of your audience.  I know that most marketing happens this way.  Although I have another version of viral marketing.  I believe it is when you get a plan together that helps not only pull in people but builds a program exponentially.  I know that most viral programs that I work with have the principle of growth in mind.  See as viruses go they are very quick to multiply thus the viral effect (gaining web traffic and prospects quickly).

Although with the good comes the bad.  You know that just by having a lot of people join your program doesn't mean that you are going to make those prospects join your main business.  Most people that grow a viral product don't understand that the seed to make a business grow doesn't have to be large.  For me and a lot of other people the key is setting up a few good relationships and growing your business on that principle.
