Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?
Have you ever been told how lucky you are? It happens to me sometimes.
What they are referring to is the fact that I am divorced, live alone, and own
my own home, and have no debts.
It's not luck - it's actually hard work, and doing without things for some years
whilst I was saving the deposit for my first home.
That was a flat/apartment in a Melbourne suburb, which I purchased just
before the prices began to skyrocket. Took me eight years to pay that place
off, and make it all mine.
Two years later, I decided that a one bedroom unit wasn't big enough for
my cat & I, so started looking for a two bedroom unit somewhere in the
same area.
This was really a fun time. Estate agents/realtors trying very hard to get
me to sign on the dotted line for someting I couldn't afford. Others telling
me there was nothing available within my budget. It got a little
discouraging at times, I can tell you.
One day I visited an agent in a different suburb, and he actually listened to
me, and took me to see three or four places which fitted my wants and my
budget - helpful agents DO exist!
Although I had been looking for a two bedroomed unit, I was lucky enough to
find a small two bedroomed house, with a front and back garden, a sleepout,
a garage, and a toolshed; in fact everything I'd wanted my new home to have.
Naturally, I bought it!
Another seven years passed, and I paid that loan off - debt free again! This was
four years ago, and I'm still in that little old house, still loving it.
Of course, I'm still getting "You're lucky" from people who are still paying off
their mortgages, or are renting, but they could do it too - you just have to
work at it. But doesn't that apply to everything?

Hi Monika & Wayne,
Totally agree with your comments on the IR laws - be interesting to see if
this Govt. gets back in at the end of the month. If they do, then you can bet
these laws will be made even tougher.
Part of the enjoyment of doing shiftwork was knowing I'd get paid well
for it. I know many countries don't have shift allowances, and it's really
a shame. You should be paid for the difficulties shiftwork can cause
in your life.
You're right - we're survivors, and we W

Hi Jean,
the new IR Laws are a damning thing for all. Would anybody in there right mind work
shift work with no allowances? I am for one not going to. My company has been looking
into the many new ways of the IR Laws. But i have headed them off at the pass. It is imperative that our operation runs 24/7. I have been with them for 20 years and in that time
have had 2 nights of when Monika broke her arm at gym. Don't get me wrong i know i am not irreplacable. But my downtime is not. This gives

Hi Monika & Wayne,
Guess what? I didn't even know what won the Melbourne Cup until I was
talking to some people at the Club that night - obviously I have a really great
interest in it! Do like the look of that gray gelding that won it though - very
good looking animal.
Yes, I agree with you, maybe we people should be running things - couldn't
be much worse than some of those we've got, now could we?
Sacrifice to get something is often the only way to get it, and if it's impor

Hello Jean,
sorry we didn't get back to you strait away. You know the Melbourne Cup and what not?
You could deffinately say we worked for it. Wayne has worked Nights for 20 years.
We call him Dracula! I worked with Wayne for 12 of those years, so yes we earned it.
We went to a friends wedding recently and there was a friend of Wayne's from school who has been living in England. Well the shock on his face when we walked in to the church. He
was beside himself. It turns out that another fri

Hi Lyn & Wendy,
Thanks for dropping by. We're all lucky to be here, with
good friends and company! ;-)
Yes, when I was divorced, came out of it with nothing much, -
about $3000, so it was hard work, but it was also a good time.
I learned so much over those years.
