Active Directory - A central storage for objects |
Active Directory provides a central storage for objects in a secure hierarchical structure. |
This structure or information includes naming, location, access and management of permissions and access rights. Active Directory only allows authorised users to access network resources such as servers, printers, files and applications shared on the network.
Active directory stores these objects in a logical manner which promotes efficient use of network bandwidth.
The active directory main resources are:
Objects
Users, security are objects.
Organisational units
Organisational units store objects such as users
Domains
Domains can be assigned into organizational groups or units, thus making system administration much easier.
Domain tree
A physical grouping of domain is called a domain tree. The first domain is called the root domain, The domain directly above a child domain is called a parent domain.
Domain tree also shares a contiguous namespace, this contiguous namespace follows the same naming DNS hierarchy within the domain tree
Forests
A forest is a complete active directory, with one or more domain trees. In a forest the first domain is the root domain,
Forests also share a contiguous namespace, this contiguous namespace follows the same naming DNS hierarchy within the domain tree.
