Drought Is Killing My Garden
As some of you may know, here in the Southern states of Australia, we're
experiencing a bad drought. It's been almost ten years now, since we
had 'normal' rains, and this spring, it looks as if the usual storms aren't
going to arrive. All the water storage facilities are well down, and we
can only water our gardens for two hours, at 6am, twice a week.
Last summer, I lost quite a few plants in my front garden, which is 95%
native plants, and some of the others are looking quite straggly.
Any ideas on keeping plants alive would be welcomed - I have mulched
as much as I could, and have given up small plants that require a lot of
water, concentrating on trees and shrubs which are more capable of
looking after themselves. It was pretty surprising to actually lose some
of my native shrubs, but they are from temperate areas, admittedly.
Sometimes we get extremely strong winds, and this does a lot of damage
to the plants. Last year, I lost my biggest tree, a small eucalypt, to wind
damage. It was an excellent shade tree, and the birds loved it. A
seedling from it is coming along nicely, and is about eighteen inches tall
now. I'm hoping it survives the heat this summer.
Don't know what will happen to the vegeatable patch in the backyard,
or the grass and plants out there. The chickens are adding their part
to the destruction! :-) I don't so much have grass as a dust and
weed patch at the moment.
Hopefully, this drought will end sometime soon - it's got to the point
that when it rains, some of us dash outside to see it, it's so unusual!
We don't believe the weather bureau anymore, until the rain actually
arrives on our doorsteps. What we used to call showers is now
considered to be rain........Bring on the La Nina effect is all I can say.

This is the perfect example of what social networking is all about.
How can anyone even comment on copy and paste crap?

Well, it's not only the drought that is killing my garden - I don't do too badly
myself, with help from the hens.......
A couple of weeks ago, we decided to move the Wollemi Pine from its pot
to a spot in the garden, so it had more room to grow.
I have to report that it didn't like the move one little bit, and it has now decided
to turn brown all over and droop in a very nasty manner.
Looks as if it is all up with Mr Wollemi.
They're a beautiful plant too, discovered in the 1990's in New

Hi Norman,
Thanks for your comments. I don't have any objection to your using my
article, at the site you mention, so long as it's attributed.
It's really beginning to get hard keeping plants alive now, and in the next
week, we are going to get temperatures in the high 30's C. and it's still
only Spring.

Hello, I am new here and interested in this blog. This is one of the best two forums I've ever met.
I'd like to save it on the other attractive community bigblackconnect.com .

We are back to sunshine now after lots and lots of rain. Everything is so green it almost hurts. Apparently not much in the catchment areas, though, so it is short lived. At least all the gardens have had a good drink. I wish we had room for a tank, but we are in a townhouse, and they won't allow them. Hope you get some decent rain too.

This weekend, we actually mowed the weeds in the alleged grass patch in
the back garden. Now there's nothing much left except a few mallow
stalks and some dust in large areas.
The chickens like it though - they do love their dust baths. It's nice to
see them enjoying themselves, and rolling in it. The expressions on
their faces are priceless.

That was tragic all round. Witnesses said that the man who attacked the older one was desparately trying to help resuscitate the pensioner after he had his heart attack. One moment of mindless, violent "water rage", and that man is in prison without bail facing a murder charge, while a young baby will never know her grandfather. All over a silly misunderstanding and a lack of respect for by both parties for each other's feelings.

Hi,
Yes, we heard that on the news - it's really a sad world isn't it?
He could at least asked the man first, about the water he was using.
Pretty soon we'll be afraid to water our gardens even on the pitiful
few hours we still have each week.

Hello to all on this blog,
the situation has turned very nasty here in Melbourne. A 37 year old man has been charged with the murder of an aged pensioner. It seems he wrongly accused him of using drinking water to water his garden when in fact he was using recycled water. The pensioner did not want to be bullied so rightly or wrongly he sprayed his accuser with water to which the result was that the 37 year old punched him to the head and he fell down hitting his head causing the man to die. Hi Penny,
Yep, I've heard about that gel stuff, and it probably would come in handy, but
it's probably full of chemicals, and I have a preference for doing things
naturally. Might have to read the packet and see just what's in it next time
I go to a garden shop.

There are some very strange people in the world, aren't there?
Isn't it amazing how the rain doesn't sink through? The top soil is just too hard after such a long time in drought.
Have you seen that "solid water" stuff? I saw something about it on TV, and apparently you can buy it at Mitre 10. It's like a gel which releases water only when it comes in contact with enzymes in the soil. You actually plant it, and from what I understood, it slowly waters for up to three months. If you ca

Hi Penny,
Yes, we got rain all last night, and it only stopped about 930 this morning.
Thunderstorms during the night, and very heavy rain some of the time.
Just checked my rain gauge, and it says 28 ml, which is just over an inch.
Don't know how accurate it is though, as it's only a cheapie.
Dug down into the soil, and an inch down, it's really dry still, so this isn't
a drought breaker, by any means.
Hope the catchment areas got it and that we get lots more!

Jean, did you get all that rain last night? It rained here for hours and hours - with thunder and lightning thrown in. I'm not sure if the catchment areas got it ... hope so.
I hadn't heard of anyone being reported, but with both you girls having it happen, it sounds like it is more common than I knew, no matter where in the world you are. There is a lot of passion about the situation, and people are now quickly jumping to the wrong conclusion.

Hi Jenn,
Know exactly how you feel about the water. (Maybe you shouldn't give
your dogs any - then see how many authorities come around!) Obviously
you're not allowed to make an honest mistake.
Got reported for hosing my concrete and watering my garden on the wrong
day here. Didn't do it, but hey, some people have nothing better to do
than make false allegations.
I DID throw the kitchen floor washing water down the driveway to
clean it a little - guess they thought that was

It is really bad here in the South....I actually got in trouble because my son was feeding and watering the dogs.....and he left the water on (he feeds them with a water hose)
Man it was like I committed the worse crime in the world with all the authorities at my house demanding I shut my water off....lol....
Scary situation...and I apologized over and over.....Myself I didn't know the water was still on...but we here in Georgia are going to the reservations...and even then.........

Hi Monika & Wayne,
Isn't it great, having all that rain? Hope it keeps going all day.
Never mind the washing, I've got a clothes horse, and the garden
is loving it. The cat isn't! She wants me to turn it off as usual.
My water tank is full, and every bucket I posess, so I can't save any
more, but guess the stormwater drains really need the flushing out.
Will go and visit the gardening blog right now! Thanks
Cheers
