Do You Feel Like You Are Going Nowhere?

Have you ever felt like you are on the way to nowhere and getting there fast? Sometimes it seems that you're doing everything "right" but nothing is happening. You go to work, are a good spouse or partner, a great parent, do the yard work, work around the house with a mutual "to do list." You're a good employee or employer and you're a great neighbor. You've set your goals and written out the objectives to meet your goals. You keep your positive affirmations in front of you and repeat them daily.

And you have this feeling in your bones that some thing's coming -- something BIG, but it just isn't arriving like it should -- like two people running toward each other in slow motion but never meeting.

I had a good friend, someone who was a joy to be around. I'll call him Kevin. Kevin was a spontaneous kind of guy -- the kind of person who gets an idea and runs with it instead of researching and studying the idea to death. Kevin was the one who would see the reasons why something would work instead of why it wouldn't. He wasn't afraid to make mistakes -- and when he did make them, he was quick to apologize, learn from them, pick up the pieces and just kept on running because Kevin never seemed to walk. He didn't have time to walk -- there was just too much to do. Too many places to go. Too many things to see.

On reflection, I realize that if you take the word "nowhere" you can divide it to create the words "now here." Kevin lived his life in the "now" and the "here." I don't think it ever occurred to him that nowhere even existed. Kevin was more interested in the journey than in the destination. That's why he was such a breath of fresh air -- why he was so much fun to be around. Kevin wasn't reckless -- he was passionate and loved every minute and saw the wonder in every day.

I think many of us need to focus more on the "now here" and much less on the "nowhere" of life. If we aren't living in the moment, we are missing out on so much! Life really isn't about a destination -- it's about the journey. It's all about how we live, about the quality of our days -- no, the quality of our moments.

Slow down a bit this week and start focusing on the journey. Take the time to read to your kids or play a board game or outdoor game with them. Call someone you haven't talked to for a long time; respond to that email you keep skipping over. Care about the moment and you'll find that life takes on a whole new meaning, new depth, new richness. And that BIG something on the horizon? I suspect once you stop looking for it, it will find you faster than you think!
