* Appear exclusive and innovative
* Charismatic or messianic leader who is self-appointed and has a special mission in life
* Controls the flow of information
* Instills a fear of leaving the group.

The thing about language is that it is a living entity. Meanings change. Just take "faggot" Which means a flaming bundle of sticks, but not the meaning we use today. The word cult has gone through a similar evolution to now denote a negative fanatical group.

Perhaps one could even say the "Royal Canadian Legion" could be classed as one Or could have been until they introduced the new Regs that allow anyone to join.

There are many forms of cult - most of them perfectly innocuous.
Any organised religion immediately comes to mind. With its' ritualistic worship, every church in the world fulfills the basic definition of a cult but I don't think that they have many of the qualities in your list.
