Strength-Training Exercise Improves Blood Sugar
Strength-Training Exercise Improves Blood Sugar
Just
two sessions a week in the weight-training room can significantly
improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetics, according to one
study. Published in the journal Diabetes Care, the study was based on a
six-month experimental strength-training program involving a group of
57 adults with type 2 diabetes.
Researchers at the International Diabetes Institute concluded that
patients who participated in the regimen diligently experienced lower
A1C levels, as well as significant increases in upper- and lower-body
strength. As an interesting footnote to the study, researchers noted
that patients who engaged in exercise at local community gyms
experienced better results than those who worked out at
home.

For those
of you that unable to exercise, or are very limited in what you may do,
this could be a viable answer. Strength training could be done with
your upper body, such as using hand weights, or small light dumbbells,
that weigh between 5-10 pounds. Then you just make up a routine of
doing spirals out to the side, in front of you, and above your head.
Doing this daily will help to strengthen, but it will also help the
circulation and burn up some energy.
For those
that are able to use the lower body, be careful if you have any kind of
back injury or problems, you could use the same technique. Instead of
using your arms you'd be using your legs, and you can strap on weights
to your ankles. Then do a short routine of leg raises/scissors, leg
curls, and holding the legs up few a few seconds. This will
definitely help with your leg circulation as well as strengthening your
leg muscles.
One
other way of exercising that you may want to consider, that is buying a
small inexpensive machine you place on the floor and you can pedal it,
just like a bike. It is a great little exercise machine that will also
help increase your circulation, strengthen your muscles, and help to
reduce blood sugar.
One of the
nicest things about the little exercise machine, other than it being
portable, is the fact that you can use it either on the floor for lower
body, or put it up on a table to exercise your upper body as well.
Here's to your health!
