Spam Meter? Anyone?
Spam Meter? What we need is better rules and better control. One person's spam is another person's ham!
I hate "spam and scams" like any other person. I have block and delete set up like a ready shot gun. But these protection is for outsiders who invade my Internet space.
How can you know if your friends want to hear about your products offer?
Should you ask them individually what's their motivation for joining your contact list? Or send out a group mail and ask, then you could delete those who don't want to hear from you.
Let's face it, if you don't want to hear from a 'so-called" friend who is a pain in you know what, all you have to do is remove that person from your friends' list and not reported them as spam after you accepted them as a contact. Sounds like entrapment.
Who knows what motivation people have in secretly reporting you like keeping your posts and ratings down? And what is the definition for spam from people who have opted into your list? Who decides?
Reasonal people can make rational decisions. But are we all reasonable?
Deleting a post from a Group list 'with an explaination" should be enough deterrent for most of those who don't read the board rules.
If they still persist to repeat the offense, you can always remore them from your list and if their acts are just outrageous, then getting rid of them from the community by making reports to to admin may be the only way to go.
Since no one can spam your message box or group without consent, you are in control of the situation. Just decide what kind of lists you want to build and who you want on those lists.
People come to these social networking sites to promote their business and then get caught up in the party crowd with these frantic discussions groups that provide no relevant content to improve their marketing skills.
They create these huge friends lists of mostly strangers, then they complain about them as spammers.
In the real Internet world, known spammers are those obnoxious marketers who drop 50 to 100 links in your comment posts with porn. drugs, etc., or constantly filled your mail box with unsolicited messages
This will never happen in a closed society.
May your days be spamless and your nights filled with Hamlet!

Hi Karen,
Yes...that may be what happened. I posed the question on the Apsene Group under one of Kristian's threads and that seems to be the consensus. So, I sent the info on to the not to happy Apsense member!
At least now that Valerie posted under Apsense about her displeasure... and even before that a voice was slowly being heard about the confusion if not the outright possibility of an unfair practice...if misused...
so, I chimed in with mine that i had already posted elsewhere...

It is possible Beth, that their spam score is actually 100% which means they have not been reported for spam - that < 60% link used to be in red, has now been faded, but is a link to more information.
Thats the problem with this type of system though. It assumes that everyone will use it wisely and fairly, and sadly that is not true.

Hi Karen and Max!
I just got a message from someone here... who is all of a sudden at 60% and this is definitely not a spammer or even someone who would oops... posted a link where I shouldn't have... type of person..
so... the system is being abused...
what happens now?
I posted about this at the Apsense Group.. I better go see what they say!

Hey Karen,
Well put.
If we take the responsibility to build our list in the direction we want it to grow, there wouldn't be a need for that dirty word floating around the community.
Your call for a positive community atmosphere by lifting people up should be the goal and not a spam meter which is a loaded firearm in the hands of children.
Thanks for sharing.

Hey Max,
Great article. I completely agree. Instead of Spam meter, I'd prefer to see a karma system. Where you can give points, but with no ability to take away.
For whatever reason (my theory is the competition theory), some people want to pull successful people down. Giving those people the tools to effectively do harm is ... well... harmful! LOL
Not only does it harm the reputation of the person being pulled down, but the person delivering the negativity ultimately suffers to.
