* Weight Loss is key to improving osteoarthritis in feet, knees, hips and fingers, particularly if it’s in the weight bearing joints. What’s more, some research indicates that higher intakes of vitamin C, beta carotene and vitamin E may slow the progression of the disease and reduce the pain.
* If you suffer from the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis - tender and swollen joints, morning stiffness, loss of grip strength and fatigue, you might be helped by an increased intake of two omega 3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). To increase your intake of omega 3 fat, eat more fish. You may also want to consult with your doctor about an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. Do not self medicate with fish oil supplements as they are not suitable for everyone. People with bleeding disorders, those on anticoagulant medications and those with uncontrolled high blood pressure shouldn’t take fish oil supplements at all.
* For those with gout, the days of eliminating high purine foods such as liver, mussels and sardines to reduce levels of uric acid are pretty much over. In addition to medication, you may find some relief if you lose weight, avoid alcohol altogether and drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day to help eliminate the uric acid that crystallizes in joints and causes the pain. If you need to lose weight, approach it sensibly. Severe calorie restriction can bring on an attack of gout in susceptible people.
