Yes its a stuck record there is a very simple reason for the comment, its very powerful.
There are many ways to build a list and many avenues to get to this course of action. (This is not going to be one of those chats!)
One lesson I learnt early on is have full control of your contacts or someone else does. You must be able to maintain your list and be able to send bulletins, updates and newsletters to keep them informed. You must have full control. Not a company, not a club, noone except you and your data base stored safely.
The advantages out weigh not having a list. As a list turns into old friends visiting you again and getting the latest off you. If a company gives you all the opt-in details good on you, thats a good company. Protecting this asset is instrumental. Also making sure the legallity is stacked in your favour. Some companies have in their small print you may use the list but, but, but we have all the list still and if we find someway to get out of this we will. Actually they don't exactly write this but its what happened to me. I lost a huge list, thousands by not knowing this years ago.
To build a list to stand the test of time, you must have full control. You must be able to take this list with you where you go.
Powerful list building is instrumental and if your able to get the skills to build this yourself this is a big favour to your long term goal. Simply you are building long term in this respect, you are building knowing they signed up with your name on the opt-in page you are the person they want to deal with.
One part of List building you learn early on is a person will join your list as they feel they can relate to what you are saying. Where you are going, and you the person. The company is the vehicle to make the money, they initially have to feel right about the person they wish to hear from.

This type of build will avoid a lot of the fuss one normally gets with leads, as they do not know you. Then you have to get down to details on how they go the leads and what type of process to obtain and well that is another story.
I want your list to be productive, informed and receptive and I am sure you do too. I want to make sure there is no way for theives to get all your leads also and onsell them. This is lessons learnt in list building. There are a few nice list builders but one trend is you must use the leads in there system, you may not take them to your list, you may only use the leads for this system, so you see you do not have a lot of control there.
