100 Scientists Back Calls For The Who To End Its Opposition To E-Cigarettes

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Specialist scientists from around the globe have thrown their weight behind demands for the World Health Organization (WHO) to cease its campaign against vaping.

As reported by the Express, the 100 scientists have expressed support for a paper by the British anti-tobacco campaigner Clive Bates, who believes that the lives of up to eight million people could be saved annually if they were encouraged to quit smoking in favour of safer vaping alternatives.

Mr Bates, who is a former director of the public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), has pointed to evidence indicating that e-cigarettes are 95 per cent safer than traditional smoking, and help to lessen the risk of health problems such as cancer.

In a stance that we can only agree with here at £1 Vape, Mr Bates has argued that smokers should be convinced to switch to e-cigarettes to help them kick their tobacco habit for good.

How has the WHO viewed vaping so far?

The WHO has been critical of vaping, declaring the practice to be "harmful to health". However, as previously reported on the £1 Vape blog, British experts have fought back, describing the United Nations (UN) health body's advice as "fundamentally flawed" and a risk to millions of lives.

The Express reported that the WHO had recently given the Indian government an award for banning e-cigarettes, despite tens of millions of people in that country continuing with more dangerous traditional smoking alternatives.

It is expected that the issue will be discussed at an intergovernmental conference aimed at examining how to bring down the number of deaths arising from tobacco use. The WHO-led ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Framework Convention on Tobacco E-Liquids Control (COP9) will take place online from the 8th to 13th of November.
