10 tips on how to choose the right tree service and avoid scams

How can you protect yourself from tree services?
How can you select the right company? How can you avoid tree service scams?

Our industry is filled with con artists, fly by night crooks and tree services that do not produce the desired results.

Based on years of experience, we would love to share some of our insights with you.
These will help you get started.

Insurance policies
Check to make sure that each tree service you're considering has the appropriate workers compensation and liability insurance. All certificates of insurance must be sent directly from the insurance agency to the tree service. It could be fraudulent. You are responsible if a company is involved in an accident and doesn't have the right insurance. You are responsible for any damage to your property or injuries that resulted from the accident.
Better Business Bureau
Verify that the Better Business Bureau has accredited the company. The BBB accreditation, although not as strong as it used to be is still a great indicator of a reliable service. Find out the rating of the company. BBB should have good standing for tree services.
Reputation
Research is a good way to determine the reputation of the tree service with its community. Positive reviews on a range of sites are a sign that reputable tree services are reliable. Verify that the company is a member of any recognized trade associations, such as International Society of Arboriculture or Tree Care Industry Association. What is the company's history? Are there any complaints in local discussion groups or forums? If you require additional assurance, ask for references from the company. It is worth spending some time researching, especially for large projects.
Too cheap?
It is possible for a price to seem too good to be true. Everyone loves a deal. If a tree service charges a low price because they don't have any experience or certifications, or they are only completing a part of the project, this could be a sign that they have not been properly insured.
Too expensive?
Similar to the previous point, don't accept a price that is too high. Do not allow a salesman to convince you that $9000 would be a fair price to remove a small oak tree from your front yard.
Multiple Estimates
It is possible to ask yourself the question, "How do I tell if a price has been set too high or low?" We suggest getting estimates from at least three companies. You should be able to determine what the average price is from these estimates. We recommend meeting with each representative face-to-face if possible. You will be able to assess the professionalism and expertise of each representative. This will allow you to ask questions and learn more about the company.
Compare Apples to Apples
You should always compare the actual services offered when you are comparing different estimates. You should consider whether one tree service offers additional services or some other benefit. One tree service might plan to cut down the tree, while another service will take it down in smaller sections. While it is quicker and easier to remove a tree, it can cause more damage on your property. Although it is easier and takes less time, removing a tree in smaller sections will result in minimal damage to your yard. However, it will take more effort and will be more costly. This is a great way to compare the professionalism, knowledge, and presentation of each company. You should not forget that the price does not necessarily mean everything. Instead, you should trust your gut instincts and choose the most trustworthy company.
Avoid door-to-door contractors
Avoid doing business with door to door contractors, especially for large projects like tree removal. Con artists who travel from one town to another to prey on seniors and homeowners are known as door-to-door contractors. You won't be caught if you make it a policy to not do business with them. It is not a smart idea to rush into tree work. There are many variables that need to be considered.
Take Caution after a disaster
Con artists are often drawn to natural disasters or any other type of disaster. This is the only time that hiring a contractor to work door-to-door may be necessary. For example, if you have a tree on your property and no electricity is available, it may be necessary to hire a tree service. Even in such a situation, ensure that you are paying a fair price. Many companies charge exorbitant prices for tree removal in north shore after a hurricane or ice storm. It is important to check that the company has all the required insurance and certifications.
Pay When Satisfied
Once you've found a tree service that you like, you should never pay for any tree removal or trimming until you are completely satisfied. Many homeowners have paid upfront for tree services only to be never heard from again. A common trick used by disreputable tree service companies is to start a project, then collect money (for any number reasons: "I need to pay my staff", “we need fuel money”, etc), and then not return. This is especially true for stump removal. The company will have removed the entire tree, then request payment and promise to return to the stump later. The company will not return until payment is received. Don't pay until the job is done and you are satisfied with the service.
