Presently one of the commonest terms you hear around the web is User Experience or UX. From the time it was coined in the middle of 90’s it continued to rise as a key mover for business conversions and following the smartphone outburst and the overwhelming rise of mobile web it became a key focus area for developers and designers of websites and apps.

In spite of its crucial role in moving the business conversion many businesses simply fall short in strategically incorporating the concept and practice in the design elements. Moreover, a vast majority of them have several misconceptions about what UX is and how it can be incorporated to drive customer engagement and business conversion. Many of the deadly UX design mistakes step from these misconceptions.

Here we would like to introduce top 10 misconceptions about UX design any business would like to take their guard against.

1.    UX and UI are equal

This a common misconception by many business owners while trying to grasp the concept. It is needless to say that they are related but their comparison is akin to comparing water with a pond of water. While UX is about everything experienced by users while using digital media, apps and web, UI relates to only the immediate interface that users navigate through and make use of.

2.    UX design is optional

UX to the consideration of many businesses is optional and they are wrong in that. Whether you design or not your business invariably has a user experience. Even a simple invoice or a business mail would have user experience. So, it is not optional but we always carry it in our business undertakings. But designing user experience is now a priority because of creating a good impression, allowing higher customer engagement and enhances the chances of business conversion.

3.    No need to optimize when it’s working

This is akin to static inertia when we do not look for scopes to optimize and improve user experience simply because it is working fine. Just a trend works and delivers results does not mean you cannot develop it further by incorporating new elements and fixing few glitches. An UX should be grasped as a continuously evolving thing with new design elements and features making it better over time.

4.    Mobile experience is only related to mobile apps

Still many businesses consider having their own mobile app is the only way to make their mobile presence. They still refuse to consider mobile web as the essential face of mobile experience. While vast majority of web search and web retail is happening on mobile friendly websites, there is no doubt that mobile web is now the principal face of web in general. It is no longer the apps on which mobile experience depends upon, but it increasingly the more accessible, device optimized, easily navigable web experience on smartphone devices that makes the mobile experience. Mobile apps are still important but only alongside mobile or responsive website.

5.    It is all about flashy, eye-grabbing design

There are many designers who cannot think of UX design without flashy look and feel. They actually hold the misconception that eye catchy design is the heart of a great UX design. They do not understand that whatever is exciting for the eyes may not be interesting for a great user experience at all. Whether the UX allows doing things easily and effortlessly matters more than so called dazzling look and feel. Besides making things look beautiful, you need to ensure performance, ease and user satisfaction.

6.    UX design depend on only designers

UX is designed by designers and they are responsible for the design output of the respective UX. That is what most businesses think. But contrary to this misconception, designers actually look after the immediate look and feel, while UX experts optimize aspects that allow better performance and ease of access for the users. Designers work hand in hand with UX specialists to improve and optimize user experience.

7.    No need to optimize old contents

Old contents in many websites work as gold mines as they drive traffic thanks to their consistent relevance and popularity. You may not promote them as much as the latest ones, but they still can grab good volume of traffic besides playing a crucial role in building loyal users. So, when your site is going through a redesign initiative, you should not skip the older contents as they have already given their output. First of all, it can cause inconsistency and make a negative impression on the brand and lastly, the users can find such difference in content design upsetting.

8.    Design is primary and UX is secondary

A good UX is the result of several qualitative operations, be it in design, integration of features or in content optimization. So, quality immersive design, though vital, is only a part of the user experience. What an UX specialist does is to find and aim for the target-audience, their respective interest, preferences and their behavior and accordingly make a design strategy to address their concerns, needs and preferences. A design plan only follows this UX strategy and tries to address the UX needs with respective design elements.

9.    UX has nothing to do with brand experience

Is not it more feasible to remember a website or app instantly with its brand colors and design elements that refers to its brand value? You can call to mind too many of such instances when you remember a brand in relation to its website and app. This happens due to consistent brand experience and UX designers need to address this. It would be a sheer misconception if you think UX has nothing to do with brand experience. Actually, the contrary is the case. A brand experience is created by an impressive user experience.

10.    UX is done once and for all

A User Experience is the result of a well-thought plan and strategic design initiatives. It does not come out as a chance happening. Naturally, to make sure it works up to your expectation and it is made to engage users without a glitch you need to test the UX and upgrade continuously. You need to test to know the problems users facing and address them as quickly as possible. UX design is far from a one-time process; rather it is a process that needs continuous check, test and fixes.
