One of Nickelodeon’s most popular series in the US is ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. Revolving around the story of 4 nations, namely Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, who experience a crack in their harmony when Fire nation launches a war against every nation. According to a prophecy, the warrior who is deemed to bring peace back is the next Avatar who, according to a cycle, is rumored to be an AirBender. While all the AirBenders are killed by the fire nation, Aang, who is trapped in ice during the attack, is discovered by the sibling duo Katara and Sokka. They then set on an adventure to stop the war by defeating the Fire Nation and the only way to do it is for Aang to learn fire, water, and earth bending.

The series manages to go into several directions with various subplots and storylines managing to intertwine with the main direction. The highlight of the series is its mesmerizing art style that has managed to gather hoards of fans even after broadcasting its final episode in July 2008. After nearly 10 years, Netflix bought the rights to the show and launched the entire series along with its spin-off ‘Legend of Korra’ on its video streaming platform. With this, the series has seen new fans emerge through Netflix and the series has become one of the most famous animated series joining the ranks of Simpsons and others. Here are the best episodes of the series with respect to the movement of the storyline, notable events, and fight sequences, in no particular order.

1. “The Storm” (Season 1, Episode 1)

This episode is all about Aang’s past and some crucial unveilings that drive the series forward. Most of the scenes include Zuko and Aang diving into their respective pasts and we find many common themes in both of their stories. This adds an extra dimension to the story’s dual nature that is as opposite as it is the same. Gyatso makes an entrance as Aang’s master, while we also notice Zuko being a completely different character by himself. We also see one of the first major insights into Zuko’s father Ozai and his terrible undoings on Zuko.

2. “The Blue Spirit” (Season 1, Episode 13)

Aang and Zuko’s confrontation is seen for the first time ever in the series without his friends by his side. The tense battle scene is filled with Zuko’s ability to showcase a war-oriented technique while Aang’s are more defensive and playful. By defeating Zhao, Zuko’s revelation of him being the Blue Spirit is a nice surprise. Momo’s dance is also one of the funniest moments of the season.

3. “The Siege of the North” (Season 1, Episode 20)

As Zhao plans the attack on the Northern Water Tribe, Katara finally finds herself being trained by a master. Zhao plans to attack the Moon Spirit and kill it to take over the Water Nation’s Northern side. Sokka falls in love with a crush and Aang is mesmerized with the tribe’s beautiful village. Aang fights with Fire Nation’s army with the help of Ocean Spirit but fails to save Princess Yue who goes to sacrifice herself to become the Moon Spirit who joins the fight.

4. “Zuko Alone” (Season 2, Episode 7)

Until this point, Zuko is shown as stubborn and uptight who goes out of his way to be the antagonist of the series. This episode changes Zuko’s character into a one filled with his past as how his father was a horrible human. The episode also goes on to show his family and the impact they made on him. Zuko approaches the royal family of Earth Nation and is banished. The viewer also sees the transition of the antagonist to Azula as the new villain.

5. “City of Walls and Secrets” (Season 2, Episode 14)

The capital city of Earth Nation is revealed as a place of theft, secrecy, and dishonesty. The expectations of the kids are shattered when they enter the city and through a drastic display of ammunition in terms of trained EarthBenders equipped to protect the king. Momo finds himself in the center of the Momo Dynasty and Zuko’s fight with Jet is a thrill-inducing scene.

6. “Tales of Ba Sing Se” (Season 2, Episode 15)

This episode is a spectacular display of characters and their personal journeys, Aang is set to explore his air-bending techniques, Sokka manages to get on with the girls through his sense of humor, with Katara and Toph awkwardly struggle to find a connection. Momo shows us his love for Appa as he misses him and Zuko’s rare sight of solace makes him throw light on himself rather than others.

7. “The Beach” (Season 3, Episode 5)

While many deem it like a filler episode, it can definitely be deemed as one of the best filler episodes of the series. The Fire Nation army goes on a small trip to a beach to give them a break from constant fighting. This trip sees Zuko pondering in his thoughts that pull the viewer into his mind. Azula is also given a fresh spin as she is seen socializing with the locals amid doing other things.

8. “Sokka’s Master” (Season 3, Episode 4)

Sokka becomes a focal point in this episode where the validity of his character into the story is perfectly captured by elevating his relevance from being the third wheel to one of the key parts of Team Avatar. The love for Sokka, who is shown mostly inferior compared to the skillset of his other friends, is intensified once he shows the caliber to the Gaang.

9. “The Boiling Rock, part 2” (Season 3, Episode 15)

This episode sees Sokka saving his father and redeeming himself with Suki. Suki is one of the main members of Azula’s friend group and defeating her communicates the intensity of Azula’s enemies to her. The episode also sees the drama between Zuko and Mai as viewers see her expressing her disappointment during her relationship with Zuko.

10. “Sozin’s Comet, part 3: Into the Inferno” (Season 3, Episode 20)

Towards the end of the series, every character seems to have developed themselves to their maximum and while many believe that the entire finale is noteworthy, this episode which features one of the best bending sequences in the entire series is one of the best. Zuko fights against Azula whose Firelord coronation ceremony is disrupted by all the members of Team Avatar. Aang also fights with Ozai who seems exponentially more powerful than Aang and both of them unleash their best skill in order to suppress each other. The series reaches its pinnacle which is channeled by this episode.
