Why an air purifier is a must

by Neha Rastogi Author
The recent report about the heavy presence of dangerous contaminants in the Delhi air has shaken many to the core. The deteriorating air quality in India became a talking point at every global summit. The air quality of Delhi is so bad that breathing it for just a day is equivalent to puffing approximately 20 cigarettes.

It has been noticed that people spend more than 90% of their time indoors, and indoor air has now been proven to be more polluted than the outdoor air. The air in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai is polluted beyond permissible limits.

Man’s constant ignorance towards the environment has led to its decline and this case is no different. Constant use of fossil fuels and other numerous factors have led to the rise of air pollution.

What causes air pollution?

Air pollution is a result of both human and natural actions. Natural events that pollute the air include volcanic eruptions, forest fires, pollen dispersal, evaporation of organic compounds and natural radioactivity. Pollution from natural occurrences is not very often.

Man-made activities that pollute the environment include:

1) Heavy Industrialization: The industrial revolution increased the production of everything, including air pollutants. Waste incinerators, manufacturing industries and power plants emit high levels of carbon monoxide, organic compounds and chemicals into the air. This happens almost everywhere people live.

2) Burning Fossil Fuels:  After the industrial age, transportation has become a key part of our lives. Cars, heavy duty trucks, trains, shipping vessels and airplanes burn lots of fossil fuels to work. Emissions from automobile engines contain both primary and secondary pollutants. This is a major cause of pollution, and one that is very difficult to manage. This is because humans rely heavily on vehicles and engines, for transporting people, good and services.

Fumes from car exhausts contain dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons and particulates. On their own, they cause great harm to people who breathe them. Additionally, they react with environmental gases to create more toxic gases.

3) Deforestation: The Industrial era improved the living standard of the people. This led to a population explosion. The significant rise in population meant that more land was needed for the construction of cities, industries and farming. A large chunk of forests was destroyed to obtain the desired land. Forests act as the lungs of our world. The trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This keeps the gases to a desired level. However, due to mass deforestation, the desired levels are no longer sustainable. Deforestation also led to many natural disasters, again polluting the atmosphere.

4) Household Factors:  Crop dusting, fumigating homes, household cleaning products or painting supplies, over the counter insect/pest killers, fertilizer dust emits harmful chemicals into the air and cause pollution. In many cases, when we use these chemicals at home or offices with no or little ventilation, we may fall ill if we breathe them. To increase the efficiency of air conditioners and heaters, we have also started sealing our rooms and hence limiting ventilation. This leads to the trapping of the contaminants.

Air pollutants affecting our health include carbon monoxide, lead, sulphur dioxide, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, etc. These contaminants can cause serious damage to one's health.

Air purifiers, however, have come to the rescue of many. Air purifier is a device that removes contaminants from the air and provides air worth breathing. This device is helpful for those suffering from allergies and asthma.

There are many brands of air purifiers using different air purification technologies. However, the best air purifier in India uses the Ozone disinfection technology that effectively kills bacteria, viruses, fungus and other pathogens present in the air. It also cleans air and inhibits bacterial growth. Ozone disinfection technology is environment friendly too. It produces Ozone gas - an environment friendly, highly reactive oxidant, which is sprayed quietly yet effectively through a fan. Kent air purifier is one such company that uses this revolutionary method for the purification of air.
