What To Look For In Red Deer Plumbers

by Samuel Lacates Freelance Writer
Most of us do not call Red Deer plumbers until a plumbing problem is evident. Unfortunately, this leaves us with little time to interview and find the best plumber for the job. However, just because you are in a hurry does not mean that you should not take the time to look for a qualified and professional plumber. In fact, failing to look for certain things in Red Deer plumbers can prove to be problematic and cost you money. Here is a list of what you need to look for in a plumber and why it is so important.

1. A Plumbers License:

When you are looking for Red Deer plumbers, always look for a plumber who has a plumbers license. A plumbers license is issued by the government. In order to get one, a contractor must pass both a written and hands-on test, showing that they know how to make repairs, hook up water appliances and generally know what they are doing. A general contractors license is not the same as a plumbers license and will not pass for one. If the contractor you are looking to work with does not have a plumbers license, they are not legally allowed to install water appliances, touch sewer or fresh water lines and pipes or do plumbing work totaling over $600.

2. Insurance:

All licensed plumbers are required to hold a policy of at least $100,000 in liability insurance. Always ask about their insurance coverage and make sure they are holding insurance. If you have a home that has high-end finishes, such as marble flooring or slate tiles, you might want to look for a plumbing company that carries a higher insurance amount, or who can get a supplemental policy for your home. The insurance is in place to cover any damages that occur if the plumber makes a mistake. If you have high-end finishes or expensive items in your home, $100,000 may not much farther than covering the structural damage to your home. Having a higher insurance amount ensures there is enough money to cover all damages.

3. Reputation:

These days, it is very difficult to find out the reputation of Red Deer plumbers. Many people think that it is quite easy, thanks to the Internet, but that isn't the case. Unfortunately, you never can believe what you read on the Internet. You don't know if the reviews are true or false, so using that to find out a company's reputation isn't very helpful. Luckily, there is one trustworthy place to check on the reputation of a plumber or plumbing company. You can always go to the City of Red Deer's licensing department and ask for a printout of the plumbing contractor's licensing history for free. This printout will show you when their license was granted, when it expired, how many complaints have been filed against the contractor, what those complaints were for, what disciplinary action has been taken and how many times the contractor has failed a permit inspection. This information will allow you to see if their customers have been happy with their work, or if they have had to file complaints with the licensing department.

4. Communication:

The last thing you should look for in Red Deer plumbers is their communication skills. Many of us get so swept up into finding a plumber who is licensed and insured, that we forget to think about whether we can easily work with this person or not. A plumber can look great on paper, but if you can't communicate well with them, it could be a disaster waiting to happen. Always ensure that the plumber listens to what you have to say and answers your questions using language you can understand. If, for any reason, you don't feel comfortable with a plumber, move on to another one.
