What Is A Desiccant Air Dryer?

by Rohit Kumar Sharing Information

Desiccant air dryer is a dryer that helps in removing moisture. It removes the water vapours, hydrocarbon from the compressed air. These dryers are mostly used in industrial sectors.

The sole purpose of the dryer is to remove any amount of moisture from the compressed air that is stored. This dryer helps in preventing any kind of condensation. What the dryer does is, it pulls off all the moisture present in the compressed air and seals it within itself.  It can be trapping the vapours in the pores inside it.

The moisture can be dangerous if it interferes with the industrial process. There can be various kinds of side effects like the pipes can get eroded because of moisture causing damage.

If the moisture combines with the salts and acids present in the air by any chance it can result into corrosion. Another hazard can be the freezing of water, the compressed air because of the presence of water in the pipes or system, which can in turn be very dangerous.  Microbial contamination is another factor that can be prevented with the help of these dryers. Without the dryers, there are high chances of growth of bacteria and other deadly virus. These can be a reason to health hazard.

There are many types of air dryers like refrigerated dryers, membrane dryers. Desiccant air dryer is different from the others as some sort of absorbent is used in it. These absorbents are salts like zinc chloride, sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride, potassium hydroxide to name a few. As these salts have a very high likeness for water, these salts are used in these kinds of dryers to absorb the maximum amount of water.

Another common product used is the silica gel or alumina. This gel is again a very common product that is used to keep the moisture away. One even finds it in the products like shoes, leather bags in the form of small pouches when brought from the market. This is generally used to keep the moisture out of the products, as leather also tends to absorb moisture quickly.

In simple words, these dryers are used to absorb water with the use of salts. Not only do they help to keep the compressed air free from moisture, it also helps in preventing different kinds of industrial hazards that can otherwise take place, resulting in a hindrance in the work process.
