Using Embroidery Digitizing In Your Business

by Samuel Lacates Freelance Writer
More and more people are shopping online, which has created a huge opportunity for small business owners. People that never before dreamed of owning their own businesses are able to create products at their own pace and sell them using internet venues. If you are in this position and more specifically running an embroidery business, this article is for you. I'm going to discuss embroidery digitizing today.

When shopping online, most people will find similar patterns throughout all of the shops. However, if you want to offer custom work you will be able to give your customers something few shops can. Offering custom work requires you to have an embroidery digitizing machine. These machines allow you to alter or create your own patterns. Although this takes some training, it is completely worth it.

Many embroidery digitizing machines work like a computer. Many now can even be hooked up to your laptop or desktop computer. We'll get into why this is important in a minute. Let's begin with the basic function of these embroidery digitizing machines. Most machines come with some basic patterns already installed on the machine, but with the option of downloading more patterns. This is convenient because you can find different patterns online, purchase them, and then use them to create embroidery designs for your customers. When you are purchasing patterns, make sure that the license includes the option to sell your completed work. You absolutely do not want to do anything that is illegal or not respectful of someone else's work. Once you have a pattern, you have a few choices. You can use the pattern as it comes. Obviously you can change colors pretty easily, but keeping the pattern the same size etc. is the easiest way to use it. Another option is to manipulate the pattern using your machine. You can alter the size of the pattern or specific parts of the pattern doing this.

Those options are what most people do with their patterns and machines. However, if you want to create your own patterns that is an option also. You can do this by having a machine that hooks up to your computer. Using a design program, you can create patterns and then transfer them to your machine to do the embroidery.

When you are creating your patterns, there are some things to keep in mind. First you need to know the limitations of your machine. Tiny details that can be done in a design program won't necessarily work with your sewing machine. The best way to figure out what your machine can handle and excel at is to test it out! Create patterns and see how they come out. My biggest suggestion for this would be to buy embroidery thread in bulk! Play with your machine and then play with it some more. Attend any classes you can while you are figuring this out. Taking a design class is also a good idea. Knowing how to use your design programs will be a big step in being able to create great patterns and embroidery projects.

Once you are comfortable creating custom embroidery patterns and projects, the next step is advertising. Many designers post ready-made products on their websites to give customers an idea of what they can do. To get more custom work, include advertisements throughout your listing letting your customers know that you can create something for them custom if they don't see what they need. This will help you to keep business and customers that might be tempted to go somewhere else.

Buying a great machine and getting the proper training will help you to build the business you have always dreamed of!
