The Different Types of Domestic Air Filters
by Sophie Moore Articles About Latest Updates| News The indoor air quality can be maintained at the right level by the appropriate air cooling and heating systems. Such systems have some time of filter that prevents dust particles, pollen and other air contaminants from entering indoors. These filters are required to be cleaned regularly and changed every often too to ensure they are working properly. There are several different air filter manufacturers that manufacture many different kinds of Air Filters a few of which are mentioned here:Fibreglass Air Filters:
Fibreglass Air Filters
These filters consist of thin flexible glass threads though are not very effective. The major drawback of fibreglass air filters being its inability to capture small airborne particles. The MREV rating of fibreglass filters will have a rating ranging anywhere between one to four. There has also been concern regarding safety surrounding such filters. The advantage being that they are low in cost.
Washable Air Filters:
Washable Air Filters
It is general practice to discard the old dirty and clogged up filter devices. But there is a new kind of air filter available and it is washable. But these filters come with their own set of issues, the primary issue being that such filters have a low efficiency reporting value (MERV). That is not all, they also allow bacterial and fungus particles and contaminants to enter via the filters and circulate inside the house. Thus the buying of such washable air filters highly inadvisable.
Polyester and Pleated Air Filters:
Polyester and Pleated Air Filters
The polyester and pleated air filters are similar to the fibreglass ones however they have an added advantage. They have superior dust trapping properties. They also have a good MERV rating which ranges from 8 to 14. In layman times this means it can remove more than 45% of the contaminants from the air.
Electronic Air Filters:
Electronic Air Filters
These are a different kind of filters and do not need to be replaced often. They are permanently fixed inside the HVAC systems. The way they work is by electrostatically charging fibres that attract and capture airborne particles. They do have a down side though; they produce ozone which is a well known irritant.
High Efficiency Air Filters:
High Efficiency Air Filters
As the name suggest they are one of the most efficient air filters. They can remove up to 85% of the air pollutants present in the air. The rating of these filters is up there with it ranging from 14 to 16. These are made using synthetic polyester fibres or pleated filter paper.
