Pharma packaging companies -Dos and don'ts of pharma packing

by Agis pharma Pharma Company India

Pharma companies in India keep a sharp eye when it comes to packaging pharmaceutical products. For medicine industry, packaging involves vigilance and risk, because it is the boxing of the medicine that determines their success.

Pharmaceutical packaging has to balance a host of complex considerations. Beyond relatively simple issues such as developing good designs and communicating with customers, pharmaceutical packagers are governed by more pressing concerns including fighting counterfeiting, encouraging patient compliance, ensuring drug integrity and balancing child-resistance and accessibility for the elderly.

Companies dealing with the packing of material are highly responsible for policy and regulation required while carrying out their work. It is vital for them to be aware of the regulatory requirements for packaging operations, which involves suitability, description, safety, protection, performance, compatibility, quality control, supplier and stability.

Medicinal products are very sensitive to external elements and in some extreme conditions they change the chemical structure of the formula. This can be hazardous for end users if he is unaware of the fact that the product he is using has not been packed appropriately or has leakage. Medicinal products must be protected from elements such as: reactive gases (like oxygen); exposure to light; solvent loss (liquid-based content); moisture permeation (powder content); sterility (closure/container integrity) and leakage. Each product must be sealed and ensured they avoid every external element that can influence the integrity of the content.

A good pharma packaging companies will always ensure that the material they are using is compatible with the product content. Chemical composition of material used, like elastomers, plastic, adhesives, etc. are most of the time reactive. The company must know the regulations for the compatibility of pharma products as each product varies individually and if the workers are not aware of their sensitivity with the material they are using to pack, this might result in fatal outcome.

Where it is important to protect the pharma product from unwanted chemical reaction, pharmaceutical packaging company must be aware of the packaging technique. This includes proper uses of the thickness of the carton boards, partitions used to separate products and to avoid their collision during carriage; wide polystyrene foam; loose fill packing with polystyrene chips; polystyrene blocks or sheets, foam rubber and bubble wrap. They always must be aware with these safety things.

Finally child-resistant packaging to keep drugs secure from children while ensuring user-friendliness to seniors is one of the main objectives of pharmaceutical packaging. Child-resistant (CR) packaging was introduced in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and is most commonly known as a safety cap on bottles that has to be pushed down before being opened. More advanced CR packaging, such as special blister packs and cardboard packaging, has only been released onto the market in the last decade, and looks set to continue its growth in the future as its popularity increases.
