Bone Marrow Transplant

A bone marrow is a mushy material inside the bones of our body that makes and store blood cells. If the bone marrow is damaged it generates very fewer blood cells which are not enough for the immune system. The role of the marrow is to create all the components of the blood, for example, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.  When the bone marrow is not produced the doctors can take bone marrow from a donor or from the patient itself before the chemotherapy. This procedure is called a bone marrow harvest. The marrow is later frozen until the patient needs it.

A bone marrow transplant procedure is to replace an unhealthy bone marrow with a healthy one. Bone marrow transplant can cure some types of cancer, such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The transplantation is a way of giving very high dose chemotherapy, sometimes to the whole body with radiotherapy.

Who Needs Bone Marrow Transplant

Bone marrow transplants can be used to treat patients with:-

•    Life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia.

•    Aplastic anaemia diseases which result in bone marrow failure.

•    Immune system diseases.

•    Genetic diseases.

Donor for Bone Marrow

•    Family member. ( Siblings or Parents)

•    Matched unrelated donor.

Transplant Procedure

Prior to the procedure, the patients are required to visit the doctor's facility where the surgeons put a focal venous catheter into a vein of the patient's chest. The patient may also get a high dose of chemotherapy, maybe with radiation, for about 10 days. Transplant procedure treats cancer and makes room for new cells to grow in the marrow. It also briefly weakens the immune system of the patient to keep the body from fighting new cells.

During the transplant procedure, the patients get new blood stem cells through the focal venous catheter. Once the new cells are in patients’ blood, they travel to the bone marrow where they grow into red and white blood cells and platelets. This process is called as engraftment which can take up to 2 to 4 weeks.

Recovery after the transplantation varies from patients to patients. Medications are prescribed by the doctors to avoid infection as the immune system of the patient is the week for several days. In many cases, the patient may also need blood transfusions. For the first few weeks, the doctors test the blood of the patient often to check for engraftment. They might also take a small sample of your bone marrow for this. The immune system can take a year or longer to recover after the transplant.

Post-transplantation there can be some symptoms of graft vs. host disease which are as follows

•    Rashes.

•    Blisters.

•    Upset stomach.

•    Change in appetite.

•    Diarrhoea.

•    Bloating or blood in your stool

•    Yellow skin and tea-colored pee

•    Dry eyes.

•    Joint pain

•    Sores in the mouth

•    Continuous coughing.

•    Trouble breathing.

•    Irritation on your penis or vagina.
