Know Why Do Some Women Get Vivid Dreams during Pregnancy by Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour

1.    Why do some women get vivid dreams during pregnancy?
Dreams are a way of connecting to subconscious, to deal with fears and insecurities relating to delivery or baby care. Also there is lot of sleep disturbance during pregnancy – pressure on urinary bladder, posture problems, and hormone changes. These lead to more of REM sleep and because pregnant women wake up often at night they remember lot of dreams that would be otherwise forgotten.

2.    It is said that a woman should be free from any stress during her pregnancy duration. Does stress play a role in the different dreams that a woman gets?
Dreams are partially related to stress and partially related to deepest or innermost feelings or thought. This gives an opportunity or as reminder to read and understand more about delivery, child rearing and breast feeding.

3.    How can a pregnant woman help herself in case such dreams reoccur frequently?
She can read more about different trimesters of pregnancy – how the child develops, what nutrition are required, what exercises can she do, how delivery occurs, what are methods of reducing labour pains, how to breastfeed and how to take care of baby. She can also discuss with her clinician regarding her delivery in detail and she can also meet her paediatrician. If the disturbance is severe then she can meet a counsellor.

4.      What is the best possible therapy in such a case?
Occasional dreams can be ignored. If persistent or scary then counselling is essential. Relaxation techniques, walking before bed time, mild yoga or exercises, reading books or articles on pregnancy and baby care can be useful.

5.     How can the family help a woman from not having vivid dreams?
Family can help a pregnant woman relax by having meals together, discussing about their experiences of delivery in a positive context, share their experiences of baby care in a positive and funnier note and reduce the anxiety she may be feeling. They can have outings and walks and husband can attend some antenatal classes with her and share her anxiety and make her feel comfortable.
