Kidney failure treatments

by Balfour Morris Medical Consultannt
Renal failure caused by loss of fluids from the gastrointestinal tract, dehydration, anaphylactic shock or serious allergic reactions and host of other reasons can lead to several other complications. Correct treatment and diagnosis of the various signs and symptoms of renal failure is necessary-that directs to the timely recovery of such worries. Renal failure can demonstrate to be fatal and requires instant treatment.

Peritoneal Dialysis :
Peritoneal dialysis is a process that aids in the elimination of toxins, chemicals, excessive water, and waste products from the body. It is a type of dialysis and exploits the lining of the abdomen to filter the blood. This lining is also called as the peritoneal membrane and serves as an artificial kidney.

A mixture of sugar and minerals melted in water-called the dialysis solution, is fed into the abdomen via a catheter. Dextrose that is present in this solution draws out the wastes, chemicals, and extra water from the blood vessels located in the peritoneal membrane; which then percolates out into the dialysis solution. After some hours, the solution is drained out from the abdomen through a tube. The cycle is iterated with fresh dialysis solution. This process of replenishing and draining is called as exchange.

Hemodialysis :
Hemodialysis is a mechanical procedure which helps in the eradication of harmful wastes, extra salt, and excessive water from the human body. This treatment for renal failure also aids in keeping the blood pressure under control. Hemodialysis sustains a proper balance of chemicals like calcium, sodium, potassium and bicarbonate and works in sync with the fluid limits, medical recommendations of diet, and medication.

The process of Hemodialysis uses a dialyzer. The dialyzer is a special filter that functions like an artificial kidney to cleanse the blood. It is basically a canister attached to the hemodialysis machine. The blood which is not pure travels from the tubes into the dialyzer, and then it filters of extra salt and water as well as the harmful wastes. Clean blood is stimulated back into the body through a different set of tubes. The hemodialysis machine plays a significant role in monitoring the blood flow and removing wastes collected by the dialyzer. This treatment is normally done thrice a week and it approximately lasts for at least 4-5 hours.

Along with the methods mentioned above, patients are often advised kidney transplantations to bring about betterments in their quality of life.
