When people consider the medical properties of marijuana, they immediately associate its effects with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), essentially the most psychologically active compound in cannabis. But what most of the people don't know is there are 483 different identifiable chemical constituents found in cannabis.
Several constituents are non-psychoactive components, and many of them are found in other plants. Only 66 of such constituents-called cannabinoids-are unique for the Cannabis plant. But that doesn't imply you'll find 66 different cannabinoid effects or interactions. Almost all of the cannabinoids are closely related and oftentimes they communicate to make the healing properties of pot. By way of example, in 2001, GW Pharmaceuticals found that only a mixture of CBD and THC offered analgesic effects for MS patients. Taken alone, neither CBD nor THC was as good at treating chronic pain as they were mixed with.
Medicinal marijuana research indicates that this non-psychoactive cannabinoids present in medical cannabis have medical properties. As an example, cannabidiol (CBD) has sedative, analgesic and antibiotic properties, and appearance to heighten the depressant effects and moderate the euphoric effects. And studies suggest that cannabigerol (CBG) may reduce intraocular pressure and give rise to marijuana's antibiotic properties.
