Because both inflammation and stress associated with the onset and development of depression, Japanese scientists investigated whether drinking green tea could relieve symptoms of depression in older people. Researchers collected data from 1,058 Japanese aged 70 and living independently.
Of these, 34.1% of them showed mild to severe depressive symptoms and 20.2% had severe depression. Compared to those that just one cup of green tea (or less) drunk per day, the occurrence of depression in the elderly who drank four or more cups per day reduced by 44%.
