Five Of The World’s Most Heroic Cats

by Lesley Sampson Freelance Writer

Cats are one of the most popular household pets thanks to their easy maintenance routine and cute and cuddly nature. Purported to have nine lives, it is said that cats always land on their feet, whether they’ve jumped from a tree or a high storey building. Our love of these feline creatures extends to cartoon characters too, and many of us have enjoyed the heroic adventures of cats a plenty while watching various television programmes. So for all you cat lovers out there, here are five of the world’s most heroic cats.

1.      Bart the cat from Illinois

High school student Jose Ybara from Illinois was saved by his heroic but mischievous cat Bart. A few years ago whilst he was asleep in bed, Jose began to have a life threatening seizure. Bart apparently leapt onto Jose’s mother’s bed in the next room and began to do anything to wake her up and warn her of the trouble Jose was in. Thanks to Bart, Jose’s mother was able to get him to hospital in time to save his life, and the Illinois government honoured Bart the cat for showing “ingenuity and persistence” during the rescue attempt.

2.      Charley the cat from Haltwhistle

It’s not often brought to public attention just how heroic cats can be when it comes to protecting their owners. One such feline, Charley, from Haltwhistle, won the title Hero Cat at Cat’s Protection’s prestigious annual National Cat Awards in 2012. He won the award for raising the alarm when his owner collapses in the middle of the night. The National Cat Awards is the UK’s biggest celebration of real-life champion cat stories. I’m willing to bet Charley received more than his fair share of cat food as a result.

3.      Cindy the cat from California

People say that mothers have a certain amount of intuition that alerts them to times when their children are in danger. This was the same in Cindy’s case, although she is a cat. Back in July 2012, Cindy literally took a bullet to save the lives of her new-born kittens. Both mother and young were taken to a nearby animal shelter where the bullet was removed from Cindy’s head.

4.      Samantha the cat from Kentucky

Samantha’s owner Tia is disabled and was given her cat by a neighbour who said that as she had bitten him, he was going to feed the cat to a pit bull dog if Tia didn’t want her. Tia of course took Samantha in and trained her to fetch items that she could not find due to her disabilities as well as training her to alert Tia to dangers. One night, Tia’s kitchen set on fire and she was alerted to it by Samantha’s meowing. Thanks to her star cat, Tia was able to escape her house alive.

5.      Oscar the cat

There are reports of famous war hero cats, and Oscar is just one example. Better known as Unsinkable Sam, Oscar served on three ships during the events of WWII; The Bismarck, Ark Royal and the Cossack. Each of these ships was hit by a torpedo and sank, yet Oscar remarkably managed to survive each sinking - a true war hero.
