Best Female Guitarists & Female Blues Guitarists Of The Era

by Bora Sula Best Hig
Music is the universal voice of our emotions and passions. Music elevates our moods, refines our inner well-being and, most of all, is our true companion anytime, anywhere. There can hardly be any person who does not love music. There are various musical instruments that make music to the ears of its listeners. Among all these musical instruments, the very one that has captured and set a trend of not just quality music, but also that of style and glamour, is the Guitar. Even to those who are not professional musicians and singers, the Guitar seems to be the most intriguing of all instruments and one that people love.

Even though guitars are one of the essential instruments that add to a song, it especially plays a very significant role in live Rock bands. It’s hard to imagine a sensational rock band without a skilled guitarist in its group. What used to be the mainstream instrument for “males” in the male dominated world of rock, is now becoming a widely accepted instrument for female rockers. With the advancement of girls in every sphere of life from politics to executives, and with their unique taste in music, the guitar is no longer a “guy’s” instrument.

Several notable female guitarists that paved the way for women to be accepted as serious musicians are Mamie Smith, known as "The Queen of Blues," who is a female blues guitarist famous for her song "Crazy Blues;" Lady Bo, the “Queen Mother of Guitar” who came to fame as Bo Didley’s lead guitarist; and Sister Rosetta Tharpe for pushing the envelope and introducing pop-gospel with her song “This Train.” These are just a few of the many talented female musicians that opened the door for women in music.

Then came female rockers Joan Jett and Lita Ford of The Runaways, Jennifer Batten who came to fame playing with the likes of Jeff Beck and as the lead and rhythm guitarist for Michael Jackson from the late ‘80s to the late ‘90s, and Carrie Brownstein (formerly with Sleater-Kinney) of Wild Flag.  And, of course, not to mention the very talented Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, and Melissa Etheridge.

In today’s guitar world, there are many, many notable female guitarists who have earned fame worldwide for their extraordinary musical skills. A few examples of some of the best female guitarists in recent years are rocker Orianthi, who was chosen to tour with Michael Jackson on his ill-fated This Is It tour before his tragic death and is currently touring with Alice Cooper, solo guitarist Kaki King with her unique style of tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar, Beyonce’s lead guitarist Bibi McGill, and Taylor Swift who has taken the world by storm with her songs based on past relationships gone bad.

The list of talented female guitarists is so vast and we look forward to seeing many more females enter the world of music.
