is an aesthetic art work with mystic beauty and finest fabrics. Owing to the
qualities of comfort, elegance and convenience, this fabric is accepted and
preferred by majority of the people worldwide.
With unique standards and methods, Pochampally
has earned the brand name as “Silk City”.
Pochampally, as popular silk city of India,
follows its ancient traditional Ikkat method to imprint beautiful designs and
styles. Even the international markets embraced its presence among the all
generations, being it the young and old.
The speciality of Pochampally is this was the
only art, used all the natural dyes in making its Ikkat designs and awarded
Geographical Indication status. Pochampally is the one and only largest
handloom tie & dye cluster with more than 5000 artisans and 2000 pit looms.
Around 100 villages of Pochampally earn their livelihoods only by weaving.
The ultimate beauty of Pochampally lies in its
origin, since early 1800’s this is the only art still alive.
There are three different ways for making
Ikkat designs: warp Ikkat, weft Ikkat and double Ikkat. In warp Ikkat, weft
yarn will be dyed and warp yarn will be tied and dyed where as in weft Ikkat it
is vice versa. But in double Ikkat, both warp and weft yarns will be tied and
dyed.
Basically, Ikkat involves applying bindings
which resist dye penetration to the threads in pre-determined patterns and then
dyed. These threads are then woven to produce the desired pattern.
The ultimate effort of artisans comes out exclusively
in dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads according to Ikkat. To enhance
its beauty, contrast hues and shades are used by weavers. These hues or shades are
applied either according to the specifications of designers or as per the
requirements.
Originally, the silk used, is brought from
Bangalore while the zari or the golden threads are brought from Surat. Motifs
such as elephants, flowers, parrots and diamonds are traditionally used in
these sarees to enhance its beauty. It takes around one to two working months to
weave a 50 meters of fabric. It may also change based on intricacy of designs,
motifs, colours and preparations.
