Advantages and Disadvantages of Psychotherapy

by David Botham Writer
Psychotherapy is a word that has certain reservations and misconception in most of the people’s mind.

Most people think that Psychotherapy is associated with treating mentally ill people which is untrue to the core.

Psychotherapy is a series of techniques that is used for treatment of mental and emotional health with some psychiatric disorder. This technique helps the people to understand what helps them to feel positive or negative and helps them to accept their weak points to deal with tricky situations

As per ‘Medilexicon's medical dictionary, psychotherapy is "Treatment of emotional, behavioral, personality, and psychiatric disorders based primarily on verbal or nonverbal communication and interventions with the patient, in contrast to treatments using chemical and physical measures.

Psychotherapy is a treatment that is conducted by a certified trained professional known as Psychotherapist on his client or a patient, couple or a group. Treatment can vary from one month to several months or even for some years depending on the severity of the problem. Generally, a session occurs about once a week and last to one or two hours. The treatment involves talking, counseling, use of medicines if needed and hypnotherapy in extreme cases.

Psychotherapists employ techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior changes designed to improve the mental health of a patient.

Psychotherapy may also be performed by practitioners with different qualifications like clinical psychology, counseling psychology, mental health counseling, marriage therapy, rehabilitation counseling, psychiatric nursing, psychoanalysis and others.

Types of Psychotherapies include behavior therapy, Cognitive therapy, family therapy, interpersonal therapy, group therapy, expressive therapy, hypnotherapy and other ones

Psychotherapy is used for treating many different issues and problems. Some commons ones are listed below:

· Depression

· Anxiety and phobias

· Post-traumatic stress disorder

· Low self-esteem

· Emotional crises

· Marital problems

· Family disputes

· Obsessive-compulsive disorder

· Personality disorders and Addictions

· Schizophrenia

Psychotherapy helps people by helping them to understand the behavior, emotions that contribute to their issues and how to benefit from them, helping them to come out of the stress and mental blocks caused by any illness, death of a relative, loss of a job or marital problem. The most important part is helping them to learn coping techniques and problem-solving skills.

Lynn Arnold, a psychotherapist for Elm Therapists at Notting Hill says Its been about 20 years since I took my first patient and I still find personal engagement a very delicate process. Many patients are not comfortable opening up and there has to be a lot of dancing around till they eventually let me in. I will even say that at times I also misread the gestures.
