9 tips to help you find the best professional French translation services

by Theda Alvear Professional translation consultant

When you are looking for an agency that does professional French translation there are some tips that you can follow to ensure that you receive the best possible translation service for your money.

  1. Choose a local agency. Even though going local might not sound like a good idea it can be. You will be able to make physical and not just digital contact, being able to see the people that are going to do your work face to face will give you the ability to judge their skills and professionalism and you will always be able to find them should any problems arise.

  1. Read the reviews. Some people tend to just ignore reviews when they consider professional French translation services. The reviews will tell you if an agency is any good or if there have been past issues with quality and service delivery.

  1. Do a test run. Though some agencies might require you to pay for a test run, it might be well worth it in the end. A test run will give you a measure of the translation sills of the agency and if they translate in a style that suits you. Some translators have a very academic style of translation while others has a more casual one.

  1. Read the terms and conditions of the agency. The terms and conditions will inform you regarding any copyright rules and non-disclosures that the agency might require you to sign. These rules are there to protect both you and the professional French translation agency.

  1. Ask about their qualifications. Lots of writers do not have any professional qualifications, and mostly it does not matter, this is however not the case with translators. If you pick an agency pick one where the team has at least a few translation registrations and certifications between them.

  1. Enquire about any additional services. There are professional French translation agencies out there that supply interpreters and other translation staff as well. Additional services includes, editing, proofreading layout and even website translation.

  1. Find out if they translate into French It will not help you much if you choose an agency that has no French translators on their team. This means you will have to start your search all over again.

  1. Get a quote. Translation services might be a little expensive, but a complete quote will show you exactly what you are paying for, and what other additional payments you might be required to make.

  1. Find out if they are willing to re-write the professional French translation if you are not happy with it. Most agencies do have a rewrite policy, but they are limited to the number of times you are allowed to ask for a re-write. An agency with a re-write policy will ensure that you receive the best translation for your money, and that you can change any mistakes as they occur.
