Oct 2 2010 01:05
An interesting historical fact is that Mexico was the home of the very first mint in the Americas.
Today, the Mexican Libertad (Liberty) ranks among the most popular pure silver coins in the world. It contains precisely one ounce of .999 pure silver, and as such, has been in high demand by lovers of beautiful coins everywhere.
The obverse design depicts a landmark statue in Mexico City, 'El Angel de la Independencia', which memorializes Mexico?s war of independence with Spain. A crown, symbolizing victory is in her right hand and in her left is a broken chain representing Mexico?s freedom from Spanish rule. Behind her are two volcanoes.
On the reverse are multiple versions of the Mexican coat of arms. The center of the design commemorates the historically significant founding of Mexico City with the image of an eagle devouring a snake while standing on a prickly pear cactus. An image that was taken as a sign from the gods, by an ancient tribe.
This coin is stunningly beautiful and would be a wonderful addition to any collection.
