Autoplay sounds and videos

Why do people insist on using stupid auto play sounds on their sites?
There are some I don't mind too much but there is nothing worse than some synthesized voice blasting from my speakers at 2am.
If your site hasn't captured my attention in a good way, Blaring music or a cartoon character with a robot voice will not help matters.
I have even clicked away from sites I may otherwise check based solely on the audio-visual assault that I endured

I agree! Autoplaying sound/video pages really shouldn't be allowed in traffic exchanges. On the other hand they absolutely should be used on the landing page of the site to provide more information about the product/service. Sadly, folks just don't take the time to create custom splash pages to direct others to the landing page. And worse, that the site owner allows this! Myself, if a Walmart greeter pulled out a bullhorn and started shouting at me as I walked in - I'd probably deck them and leave!

I do not agree I think they Should always be Allowed they work and you can get sign ups it will attract attention. That's The Whole Idea is to get folks to notice your Site.

Well, maybe they work for enough people to make it worthwhile but I'm glad to be on Windows 7 now so I can mute the browser without muting everything else. It's really only a problem now when I forget to mute it and the sites I do hear I just don't sign up for.

Pete, I disagree. The autoplay videos in traffic exchanges totally annoy me and I now surf with my sound muted so your videos do not work as I do not hear them.

AffiliateMoney, that sounds like a great feature being able to mute the browser only. Do you know if Vista has this feature?

@Debi
I'm not sure as I don't have a computer running vista anymore, I think the feature came out with win 7. If you want to try, click on the vol control bottom right of screen, you see the slider for volume and click on the word "mixer" below it then you can adjust individual apps. you can even run Firefox muted and Chrome unmuted for example

For those with Firefox, there is an add-on called Stop Autoplay, that does help greatly, but not 100%. I've used it for nearly a year and love the peace and quiet! I can now choose to listen or watch or not to and that's just the right way of promoting.

@thePCGuy - Thanks for letting me know about the add-on. I'm going to download it today.

I don't mind videos. If I'm on a TE, I just turn off my speakers. If the website is eye-catching, I'll watch them. If it's a REAL person showing me screencaptures, I'm more likely to watch. What bothers me the most are those computer generated people who talk in their robotic voices. Am I supposed to relate to them or something?

I also often find the same thing and is really annoying.

As angry as it makes some people, it works and is not going away. Use Linux with Firefox and they don't play unless you ask them to, even if you don't mute the sound.

I love auto play as long as the thing doesn't burst my eardrums... OK, I will leave names out but some almost cause a heart attack
