Equallogic (formerly Compellent) is a storage designed for a wide range of users, versatile and extensible. It represents the cutting edge of DELL products.

Equallogic has been specially developed with the aim of offering data security, performance and the scalability of the Unified Storage.

Its extreme complexity, however, creates many problems when it comes to having to intervene with a data recovery. The individual disks are hardly suitable for the reconstruction of the raid with classic methods.
In this case we dealt with data recovery of an Equallogic with 15 HDDs in RAID 10, containing about 20 VMware virtual machines.

The system presented several failed disks and an uncertain situation following unlucky interventions during the first attempts to solve the problem.
Data recovery has been addressed first of all disk by disk, creating RAW images and carefully checking the status of the disks and the possible presence of errors.

Subsequently we proceeded with the creation of the paired disks, to understand which elements of the RAID 10 were involved. Thanks to the work of our technicians we were able to regain access to data.

In the next phase, our specialists in the VMware department were activated , because they needed access to about 20 virtual machines lost after the failure.

With access via the serial port we configured the Equallogic and started the connection with VMware via iSCSI. After the storage paths and networking configurations of VMware, we were finally able to access the datastore and save the virtual machines.
