Stop developing your attitude and develop your habitude!

 Business Round Table
Think positive.  You hear it all the time applied to everything.  I've got news for you, a positive attitude by itself will get you nowhere fast.  You can think the positive thought that you will not die in a car crash but if you are a NASCAR driver, what is the effect of your habit on your positive thinking?  You're out on a racetrack with dozens of other drivers whizzing around at unsafe speeds.  Is that habit really supportive of not dying in a car crash?

It's the same thing with business, family and any other area of your life.  Your habits must support the positive thought.  Let's say you want to be a great parent.  You must first have the attitude of a great parent, then practice the habits of a great parent.

If you want to be successful in business you must have the attitude of a successful business owner then practice the habits of successful business owners.  Bill Gates and Donald Trump are not leaders in the business world because of "Positive thinking" only.  The both practice the habits of successful business owners daily.  They don't even think about it, it is part and parcel of who they are.

That's what you have to do develop your own "habitudes"  of success until they become a natural part of yourself, like breathing.  It does not come easy, it takes work.  Habits do not occur overnight, they take constant reinforcement to become a habit.  But once it becomes habit you don't even think about it anymore, you just do it.

Yeah, those damn scraps....it should be kinda obvisous but you wouldn't believe how many 'green' employees just walk right over them without even reckonizing the safety hazard or anything..lol

Now I am off to either find a cameraman or strap a camera to my head. I've been planning to shoot some vids for youtube, but I've just been so busy processing firewood and building rustic log railing...2 guesses as to what my first 2 you tube videos may be!

Well that was $500 well "invested" by the way you are now worth $50 more. But those are great examples of habitudes. You really didn't do anything major but look at the difference. And thats the big picture developing the habits to support your attitude. I really love the pick up the scraps and put them where they belong one!

$500??? I feel so trashy, LOL...or is it classy?

Ah shucks, anyways....how about some different insight(then you'll know if you got screwed on your investment or not! LOL!)

I'm talking about what has allowed our small wood business to thrive in a time when lumber prices are crap, labour is in short supply, fuel costs are outragous and small and big mills alike are closing their doors. Just so you know I ain't talking total BS, roughly 10 years ago there were over 90 small sawmills and about 10 larger ones in my area. Today there are less than 10 small sawmills left and the last large(super mega-giant mill) just shut it doors this month.

So what would I attribute our so-called success to in a time when everyone else is going out of business?

Well for one, we didn't squash thew competition by any means, so don't even do there. In fact we do business with the remaining companies(used to with many of the past ones too) that is mutually beneficial for each party, or at least that is always the hope...some deals just go bad...LOL

If I had to chaulk it up to anything, it would LARGELY be the little habits upon which we have founded our business. For instance, if you could imagine, our yard has a natural way of getting sticks and scrap lying all over it. Talk about a never-ending mess but the solution is really simple - get everyone in the habit of picking up the sticks and scrap when they happen to be walking by it anyways, and place it in the appropiate place which is most likely the firewood pile.

Or another instance, we have a BIG wheel loader...actually it is EX - US Military and you know them guys don't piss around, but anyways the point is the thing is so hard on the ground it always creates these ruts, which are a real pain in the a** once it rains or even worse when it freezes for the winter(Rough, OUCH!) - The solution, train the loader operator(s) to move over, drive on a different patch of ground each time and pack the yard evenly(Our yard is in awesome shape, dispite wet weather and saturated ground...and all we did was change the way we do what we were doing anyways!)

These little things save you Time and Money, compounded over time it all shows up on the bottom line...which you better hope is black!

Or another habit, when a prospective customer comes by to check out a product, we ask them questions...this can be really annoying to some of them especially if they think they know it all about wood, but somehow we have never ended up selling someone Aspen firewood when they were really looking for Kiln-dried FAS Birch! LOL! Not to mention these customers are quite often satisfied and when they're friends stop by and see this unique and beautiful product in their home, the question that enevitablly comes up of 'where did you get that?' is responsible for I'm guessing half our sales.

GOOD SERVICE is a MUST-HAVE HABIT for small business owners, only a**hole corporations like walmart get away with treating people like S***!

Now, not exactly how Donald Trump or Bill Gates might put it, but I promise you the same principles that make their empires grow.

P.S. We are the only sawmill company in the area that figured out we could bundle and sell our waste as firewood, everyone else just piles theirs up and burns it!

Wait....hold on a minute!

Jeff, do you mean to say that 'some' people need to quit FLOCKING AROUND?

LMAO!

I tell you what though, most of my action online for the last year or so(and hopefully for the rest of my life) has gone into GROWING my Knowledge...any public exposure, people I meet, sales I make, etc.. at this time is an added bonus to all I have and eventually will learn.

Yes they should. This would do them much more good than another "Think positive" lesson without any emphasis on action!

Yep, it's the old ACTION thing that oddly stops people in their tracks, Cheryl! :) LOL!

Speaking of ACTION:

Look at Wolfgang Puck- EVERYBODY loves him, he is a Brand himself-! Totally creative, and his skills go way beyond cooking...

He is a Master Of His Market- appearing at least once a week on some publication or on TV, Radio or Internet...

He is a "Self-Made Man", and THAT is the feature that people most admire!

No matter what field you choose, learn how to make it your own- no matter what the obstactles are!:)

Wolfgang Puck's father told him that "Cooking wasn't a manly way to make a living..." There are times in Life when you absolutely SHOULDN'T listen to other people, No matter WHO they are!

"DO Your Best and You Will Become Your Best!" ,and that quality feature can come from whatever you choose to do in your own Daily Life!

Anybody can be "a dude", but people who really WORK AT IT can become "The Dude"!

I, myself, have a passionate desore to win every damn cooking contest that I choose to enter... so I plan, study and take lessons and great advice- I want to walk away with some of the phenomenal prizes... "Cooking Contests?" ,People say... to which I say, HellYeah, Man!

Some cooking contests have prizes that weigh in at a million bucks or more, AND the odds of winning are waaaaaay better than hitting the Lottery! LOL!:)

PLUS the simple act of entering a contest puts your name and face before the public- this is very good when you are in the field of Marketing, like me...

Great discussion! Some of the people that are about to declare themselve DOA ought to come flocking here.... :)
