July 4th is known would wide as Independence Day in America. In tribute to America's 232nd birthday, here are the top 5 myths about the 4th of July:
5. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on the Fourth of July Well this is true they both did die on the July 4th, 1826, but the story about Adams uttering the words "Jefferson lives" is not exactly true since Jefferson died earlier in the day than Adams. 4. Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag Actually no one knows who sewed the first flag but we do know that Francis Hopkinson designed it. 3. The Liberty Ball rang in American Independence This story was part of a children's book entitled Legends of the American Revolution, written by George Lippard in the middle of the 19th century. By the way the Liberty Bell was not even named until the early 19th century when abolitionists used it as the symbol of the anti-slavery movement. 2. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th 1776 Most of the delegates actually signed the document on August 2nd 1776 when a clean copy was produced by Timothy Matlack, assistant to the Secretary of Congress. 1. Independence was declared on July 4th The Continental Congress actually declared independence on July 2nd 1776.
