Compliance, compliance and more compliance!

If there is one word that business owners hate to hear, it must be compliance. Many business owners see this as a bad thing, but it's not.

Compliance comes about because of governmental meddling, but this governmental meddling has a positive result. The government comes up with minimum standards. These minimum standards are designed to protect you, the business owner, and your customers.

THE BUSINESS OWNER
Minimum standards takes the guesswork out of what you need to do. It's all laid of for you and you just need to implement it. By following these standards and making sure your employees understand and follow them also, you often minimize your liability.

CONSUMERS
As consumers we have a right to expect a business to provide a certain level of service. We have the right to expect a business not to break our trust. Compliance laws tell the business owner this is what you must do to treat your customers right.

NON-COMPLIANCE
When the business owner fails to live up to minimum standards, the government has avenues to punish the business owner. This can take the form of fines or legislation allowing your customers to sue you. These things are not in place because the government is out to get you but to protect all parties involved. Your industry is protected by weeding out the businesses that give the industry a "bad name" and the customer is protected from harm.

To look at the way compliance can help you, think OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Regulations.  Many businesses hated this regulation when it came out but before OSHA many businesses did not consider safety in the workplace, because of OSHA workplace accidents have decreased.  Less accidents on the job means less people with grounds to sue their employer for unsafe working conditions.

Look at the manufacturing industry.  When an unsafe product is placed on the shelves people can be injured or worse.  Unsafe products get pulled and safety measures are put in place like those annoying seals on just about everything we buy nowadays.  Those seals protect consumers from product tampering.  Everyone knows if the seal has been broken or tampered with not to use the product.

Take a new look at compliance, especially in our "sue happy" society. Realize that it is a benefit for everyone.
