Hello,
The True Meaning of Giving Back, In What You Believe In:

This is a story about a young man, who understood what it meant to be a Professional Hockey Player who spent 12 years playing in the NHL, (National Hockey League). This is about a young man who could have just walked away from it all in lived in comfort for the rest of his life. Instead he decide to do, what nobody would even imagine, live in one of the most remote places, humanly imaginable, and take on the most challenging job of his young life.

Before beginning a career in which he won an Olympic silver medal in 1992, scored 102 points as a Boston Bruins rookie in 1992-93 and then went on to Stanley cup finals with the Washington Capitals and the Buffalo Sabre's. Joe Juneau, from a small town called Pont-Rouge, Quebec who also earned a degree in aeronautical engineering in just three years. He did this despite studying in a language that he could not speak, when he started at the university. He says to this day his biggest accomplish in his life was getting his RPI degree ahead of all he accomplished in Hockey.

His office is located Kuujjuaq, a small town of 2,100 and the metropolis of the 14 villages dotted approximately 800 klms north of Quebec City. He decide to move his wife and two daughters to start up a program where "Drug Addiction and Suicide have become problems OF ALARM. Now he works at the 58th parallel, in a place where there are no roads other then the streets in Kuujjuanq. This area is also knowing as Nunavik where the Inuit population call home. Joe Juneau first visited Nunavik on a caribou hunting trip, back in 2004 and decide that he had a mission to accomplish in his life.

On a return trip in the spring of 2006, he had notice that the local rink was completely deserted and children playing in the streets without any supervision. He presented a plan for his hockey program to the Inuit-run Makivik Corporation. The program set forth 10 objectives, which included educational tie-ins, crime prevention, the development of local coaches who could meet standards set by the Quebec Ice Hockey Federation, nutritional instruction and community volunteerism.

There are, in fact, three conditions for children who want to stay in the program, wear the uniforms and maybe make the travel team. They are not judged on school work, per say but on attendance, behavior and effort. Each Friday the grammar teacher fills out reports assessing each student in all three categories. By sticking and meeting these conditions at school, allows the children to take part in this program developed by Joe. He makes it very clear in order for you to be part of my program, you will need to follow these simple rules, no exceptions what so ever. As one of the local teachers said, a hockey stick can be a wonderful carrot.

What he has accomplished, is teach the children the most fundamental basic skills and captured their attention that they can develop life long skills that will provide them with the ability, to be able to make them the best they can be within their own ability. He organized drills as elementary as having younger children skate to center ice and belly flop, acclimating them to falling. As time progressed the children slowly improved on their skills and obtaining much needed confidence in their ability. Children started to change their attitudes, going home and helping around the house with daily chores and helping younger siblings with home work. Small steps, but why would a person do this? Move his family to one of the most remote places in North America. How many lives can Joe Juneau actually change? Can a harsh and hunting landscape be remade through sports? Time will tell Joe has made a difference for many young children in
Regards,

Joseph

Hi Cheryl,

it is a very good movie we have actually watcged a few times me and my son for all the right reasons. The movie is based on a true story and it really has a very important mission as in the above story converting young adults to doing something with their life's........

Takes a special person to be able to do this..........................I recall when l was a kid we had a man who took special pride in our community and created a drop in center for kids to come in and play all types of different sports and watch the odd movie back then to watch a movie was a big thing.......(not trying to show you my age) ok was on reel to reel, and it skip the odd frame...............but we as kids looked forward to them friday nites.......

Since when are there ever the" Perfect set of circumstances to practice Giving?"! :)

As someone who is in the business of sharing resources, there's never a time when giving back is not a part of my Life..

The perfect places and people to give back to, are the ones that the mainstreams of society have taken away from, or utterly ignored, as well as the people who can't see another way to change their lives for the better...

These people exist everywhere, and this fact in itself means that there is always a right time and a perfect place to practice Giving.. Just Do It! :)

Joe is a great example, and there are many, many more... Little by Little, we are going to win our Earth back... just wait and see! :)

Hello Jeff,

Thank you, l like the words you choose.....Little by Little, we are going to win our Earth back... just wait and see!

Them words are very powerful, if each one us does a little to make a difference in someones life then we are taking small steps to accomplishing an impossible task, l say impossible, because its a task that is over looked but many of us. The reason that l wrote the article on Joe, was first of all he was a Professional Player, could have enjoyed the rest of his life without giving anything back, he did it with the support of his two daughters and his wife. So in some sense the credit should also be giving to the entire family as they are also part of his mission to accomplishing what he envisioned before he decide to make a difference for the Inuit people.

It all starts with educatting young children into beleiving in them selfs and understanding the meaning that you do have the ability to change habits of the pass.........His program is based on education with sports as a reward....................

Thanks to Joe the Canadian Goverment is actually looking at providing the Inuit Community with a 30 million budget to build a new arena and educatting and training the Inuit poeple to continue this program...............

Great story Joseph;
I remember watching Joe when he played.

Life will just pass you by if you're not careful, and it's all about living it to our fullest potential. It's not about US as an individual, but more about what we leave behind after we're gone.

How did we influence those we came in contact with to ensure we left things better than the way we found them. After all is said and done we really only have the six feet of land around us after
we are gone and "maybe" our legacy.

Joe Juneau will be a man that has left his legacy,,,,,,,,there are others as well.

Yea he sure was a gifted player, had it all and then decided to do it all for the love of the game. What he did is very special not many would give up all them fancy hotels for that sort of life style why would they..He did....why he is a winner...

"IT" takes time to understand the true meaning of success in this "FASHION" not many have this ability, money never comes into play here....Name a current Athletic that shows and displays this type of leadership....

SHOW ME ONE.....

Thanks.

Joseph, your story inspires me to continue developing my niche. I'm not famous or don't have a lot of money to give, however I can help people identify problems and brainstorm resources. AND that is what I love to do. Thank you

Hi Patsy,
I appreciate them kind words, glad this story has that effect on you, what life is all about giving back...........not always about what you have or how much you have it starts from the heart...and the heart understands the meaning of giving back...what we all have to do, the more we give the more we get back in return,,,,
