New Year's Traditions (superstitions)

Urban Legends and Old Wive's Tales
There are so many Traditions and superstitions connected with the New Year it's almost impossible to keep them all straight.  My family has several traditions that have taken root over the years.

Men First
The first person to enter your house during the New Year should be a male.  A woman will bring strife if she is the first to enter.

Hoard Everything
You are not supposed to let anything leave your house on the first day of the year including trash! It will start a pattern of loss.

Start the Year Debt-free
You are supposed to start the year in the black, If you have debts on New Year's day you will be in debt all year.

The New Year's meal
Black eyed peas and collards greens are supposed to be eaten on new years day.  Black eyed peas are supposed to be lucky and the collard greens represent money!

If you have New Years traditions or superstitions please share them!

Beth, thanks for stopping by.

I love black eyed-peas and collards. The only way to cook either one correctly is to start with good smoked hamhocks!

I love Black eyed Peas as we had them regularly when I was growing up.... but we didn't have the collard greens... odd... but I was just thinking of cooking a pot of Black eyed Peas the other day and here I stumble on the reason why! and now i need to make sure I have greens to go with it as well!

thnx
Beth

I’ve heard of black eyed peas (I’d better check to make sure we have some.) but the rest are new to me.
I knew there had to be a reason for all this bad luck.
Thanks for the info!
